This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take ownership of first-line compliance and controls for the growth function, which includes acquisition channels, marketing programs (such as social media, direct mail, email, and co-branded initiatives), partner and affiliate relationships, as well as new product launches. This involves reviewing each aspect for regulatory, fair lending, and disclosure risks, and approving marketing materials and third-party-produced content prior to their release.
• Integrate expertise in UDAAP, Regulation B, CAN-SPAM, TCPA, and disclosure into the design process — translating regulatory requirements into actionable guidance for channel launches, partner agreements, and product modifications at the design stage, rather than at the end of the process.
• Develop and sustain the business control framework, which encompasses marketing approval policies, campaign inventory and change control, compliance monitoring, and regulatory change management. Assess exposure and adjust controls based on actual risk rather than volume or optics.
• Lead root cause analysis and remediation design for compliance issues related to growth, including complaints, risk assessments, marketing claims violations, and disclosure errors. Collaborate with the issue management function to implement lasting solutions that are tracked to completion.
• Serve as a reliable compliance partner in both directions, facilitating clarity and speed for Growth, Product, Marketing, and ML teams, while representing the business in interactions with second-line compliance, Legal, and auditors during risk assessments, fair lending reviews, and regulatory examinations. Ensure examination-ready documentation and act as the primary point of contact for audits and governance reviews.
• Build and nurture a compliance team that possesses depth in consumer protection, marketing, and acquisition channel regulation. Establish a standard for analytical rigor, proactive issue identification, and practical guidance that empowers the business rather than merely gatekeeping.
• Over 7 years of experience in compliance, legal, or risk management within consumer lending, banking, or fintech sectors.
• Direct experience in marketing compliance, oversight of customer acquisition, or partner/affiliate compliance.
• Extensive working knowledge of consumer protection regulations related to loan marketing and offer generation, including UDAAP, Regulation B, CAN-SPAM, TCPA, and relevant state laws.
• Proven experience in managing a first-line compliance function within a bank-regulated environment, demonstrating the ability to operate across first-line, second-line, and Legal structures with clear accountability; must be credible with regulators, internal audit, and senior leadership.
• Competitive compensation package, which includes base salary, bonus opportunities, and annual equity grants that vest quarterly.
• Retirement benefits to assist in future planning, featuring a 401(k) or Group Retirement Savings Plan with a company match of $2 for every $1 contributed, up to $15,000 annually (USD in the US, CAD in Canada).
• Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) with discounted stock purchase options available for eligible employees (US only).
• Comprehensive health coverage aimed at supporting you and your family, including medical, dental, vision, and wellness resources for those in the US, as well as supplemental health coverage for Canada.
• Contributions to Health Savings Accounts from Upstart for eligible plans (US only).
• Income protection benefits including life insurance and disability coverage for enhanced financial security.
• Paid time off, sick leave, and company holidays in accordance with local regulations.
• Paid family and parental leave to assist with caregiving and significant life events (duration varies by country).
• Family-oriented benefits designed to support fertility, parenthood, and caregiving needs.
• Employee Assistance Program (EAP) providing mental health support and life-centered resources.
• Financial wellness resources, including access to financial planning tools and a financial concierge service (US Only).
• Annual wellness allowance to promote your physical and emotional well-being as well as personal development, tailored to what matters most to you.
• Annual productivity allowance for investing in the relevant tools and resources needed to excel in your work, regardless of your location.
• Opportunities for connection and community through team events, all-company updates, and employee resource groups (ERGs).
• Onsite perks, such as catered lunches and fully stocked micro-kitchens when working in one of our offices located in the Bay Area, Austin, Columbus, and New York City (opening Summer 2026!).
