Database Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Oversee and enhance Oracle 11g/19c RAC, MySQL 5.7/8, and PostgreSQL database systems along with associated infrastructure in on-premises, AWS, and OCI cloud settings.

• Strategically plan and carry out database upgrades for Oracle and MySQL, ensuring minimal downtime across all platforms.

• Conduct advanced database troubleshooting, optimize query performance, and resolve issues across Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, HAProxy, and Keepalived.

• Design, implement, and sustain database replication architectures, including both master-slave and master-master setups.

• Create and uphold automation for database operations utilizing Linux shell scripting, Python, Terraform, and Ansible.

• Oversee backup and recovery processes using RMAN, mysqldump, pg_dump, and other tools to meet RPO/RTO objectives.

• Establish and manage database monitoring, alerting, and dashboards with tools like Grafana, CloudWatch, or similar platforms.

• Work in conjunction with application development teams on schema design, query optimization, and capacity planning.

• Engage in on-call rotations as an escalation point for critical database incidents.

• Document database architectures, runbooks, and operational procedures.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience as a Database Engineer or DBA in production settings.

• In-depth knowledge of Oracle 11g/19c RAC administration, including RMAN backup/restore, patching, and query optimization.

• Solid experience in MySQL 5.7/8 administration, replication techniques (master-slave, master-master), and performance tuning.

• Familiarity with PostgreSQL administration and tools (pg_dump, replication, vacuuming).

• Proficient in Linux systems administration (Ubuntu/RHEL-based) and shell scripting.

• Experience with automation and infrastructure-as-code tools: Python, Terraform, Ansible.

• Understanding of high-availability components such as HAProxy, Keepalived, or similar load balancing and failover solutions.

• Familiarity with Git-based workflows and CI/CD practices for managing database changes.

• Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis abilities, capable of diagnosing and addressing complex database issues under pressure.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the capability to work effectively across time zones in a distributed team.
