• Conduct chromosome analysis, which encompasses imaging and karyotyping of cytogenetic samples.
• The primary focus is on constitutional blood cases, with the potential for prenatal cases.
• Evaluate chromosomes for count, structural abnormalities, and morphology from computer-generated images of metaphases in accordance with established SOPs.
• Prepare preliminary reports for interpretation by arranging (karyotyping) the various pairs of chromosomes to identify their correct numerical order.
• Input analysis data into relevant computer systems for director interpretation.
• Review karyotypes in line with departmental and group protocols before director evaluation.
• Ensure chromosomes are accurately placed and oriented.
• Confirm patient demographic details and ensure that the karyotype aligns with the written diagnosis.
• Verify that karyotypes are suitable for director review based on the requested tests and their results.
• Facilitate the remote transfer of electronic images to and from satellite reading laboratories for analysis.
• Carry out routine maintenance on laboratory and computer equipment within the designated area.
• Engage in proficiency testing as required and maintain records that show proficiency samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
• Attend all mandatory meetings and represent the laboratory in a professional manner.
• Participate in required continuing education activities and adhere to company policies and procedures.
• Perform additional duties as necessary to fulfill the needs of the department and the company.
• A Bachelor's degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology.
• A minimum of 2 years of experience in a Cytogenetics clinical laboratory.
• At least 1 year of experience in performing karyotyping.
• A minimum of 1 year of experience in conducting constitutional cytogenetics analysis.
• Preferred: At least 1 year of experience with prenatal analysis.
• Preferred: At least 1 year of experience using Applied Spectral Imaging (ASI) software.
• Preferred: ASCP certification in Cytogenetics (ASCP CG).
