This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Conduct research and develop innovative legal arguments and potential litigation strategies, overseeing case or project teams as necessary.
• Attract and maintain relationships with clients and plaintiffs; collaborate with outside counsel, co-counsel, and opposing counsel; and represent Protect Democracy in external non-litigation settings (such as coalitions).
• Assist in establishing our reputation as thought leaders on legal matters relevant to our mission.
• Engage in and oversee discovery processes, which include informal fact-finding and evidence collection, document review, witness interviews, written discovery practice, depositions, and expert discovery.
• Formulate, influence, and implement intricate strategies for litigation, policy reform, and other integrated advocacy initiatives aligned with our mission.
• Research, draft, and revise pleadings, motions, and other briefs submitted in impact litigation.
• Collaborate with the communications team to create communication strategies that support legal theories of change (such as legal memos, primers, editorials, and op-eds).
• Work alongside policy advocates to contribute to innovative policy solutions and campaigns, collaborating with legislators, agencies, experts, and coalitions to promote them.
• Take part in culture-building initiatives throughout the organization.
• Between five to ten years of legal experience (including clerkships).
• Familiarity with election law or voting rights law and/or experience in impact litigation or supporting policy advocacy.
• Outstanding analytical, writing, and presentation skills tailored for both legal and non-legal audiences.
• Capability to track, prioritize, and manage a diverse range of responsibilities.
• Ability to cultivate collaborative relationships and operate in a team-oriented environment with individuals from various backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
• A growth mindset along with a willingness to give and receive feedback at all levels.
• Flexibility and the ability to excel in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
• A strong commitment to upholding democratic norms and institutions, and an awareness that our democracy has not fully represented communities of color.
