This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• The Coding Specialist reviews physician/provider documentation within health records (electronic, paper, or hybrid) to identify the principal diagnosis, secondary diagnoses, principal procedure, and secondary procedures.
• Employs encoder software applications, which encompass all relevant online tools and references for assigning Internal Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification diagnosis and procedure codes, as well as Current Procedural Terminology / Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) procedure codes, including all necessary modifiers.
• A minimum of two years of current coding experience is required.
• Possession of a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Procedural Coder (CPC), or Registered Health Information certification is necessary.
• Completion of an AHIMA-approved coding program, an AAPC-approved coding program, or an Associate’s degree in Health Information Management or a related field, or a combination of equivalent education and experience is mandatory.
• Current experience with encoding/grouping software is preferred.
• Proficiency in using both manual and automated versions of the ICD and CPT coding classification systems is preferred.
• Capability to operate a standard desktop and Windows-based computer system, including a basic understanding of email, internet, and computer navigation.
• Ability to utilize additional software as necessary to fulfill essential job functions.
• Familiarity with distance learning or web-based training tools is desirable.
• Strong written and oral communication skills suitable for both on-site and virtual working environments.
• Effectiveness in communicating with individuals and groups that represent a variety of perspectives.
• Capacity to work with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgment.
• Skill in researching, analyzing, and synthesizing information from various on-site or virtual sources based on technical and experiential knowledge.
• Must demonstrate critical thinking abilities and possess the skill to prioritize workload.
• A High School Diploma is required; an Associate’s degree is preferred.
• Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
