• Oversees, directs, and actively engages in projects related to coding integrity, encompassing specialty-specific coding education, audits, research, education, and financial analysis.
• Manages all facets of the project and delivers educational content to the executive leadership team and physicians.
• Guarantees that training and quality assurance requirements associated with the project are evaluated and executed, either by conducting or supervising activities.
• Aids physicians, coders, and the leadership team in achieving accurate code assignments.
• Creates strategies to ensure oversight and maintain ongoing compliance.
• Informs physicians about policy changes or opportunities for improvement in coding/documentation.
• Trains billing staff across various regions on policy updates.
• Supports the HIM/Coding Management team with all functions related to coding compliance.
• Responsible for supervising all coding consulting projects to ensure timely and accurate recommendations align with management decisions.
• Guides, mentors, assesses, and advises employees to ensure competence in all job responsibilities, including adherence to CMS or other coding guidelines.
• Conducts audits and trains coders to maintain coding consistency across all regions.
• Interprets CMS/Coding policies and provides education to both physicians and Coding and Education staff.
• Trains new employees and interns.
• Develops metrics to track and monitor initiatives aimed at improving coding practices.
• Provides consultation to physicians.
• Modifies behavior to suit the specific patient demographic, which includes respecting privacy, appropriately introducing oneself to patients, tailoring explanations of services or procedures, obtaining permissions, and adjusting communication style.
• Performs other related duties as necessary.
• A minimum of 5 years of relevant clinical experience (nursing or allied health) OR coding experience with Medicare and Managed Care Reimbursement, Managed Care contractual arrangements, and a background in patient accounting/billing OR 3 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree.
• Certification in Coding (CCS-P, CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder- Hospital (CPC-H), Certified Coding Specialist- Physician based (CCS-P), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
• Proficient computer skills and dexterity necessary for data entry and information retrieval.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the capacity to present information clearly and professionally.
• Must be adept with Windows-style applications, various software packages relevant to the role, and keyboard operations.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Strong leadership abilities.
• Proven ability and experience in preparing and delivering presentations to a diverse range of audiences including Physicians, Vice Presidents, Compliance Officers, Attorneys, Directors, Managers, and staff.
• Demonstrated ability and experience in planning, coordinating, and reviewing projects that involve complex business and technical issues.
• Strong analytical and operational problem-solving skills.
• Effective time management skills, with the ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple work areas and assignments under fast-paced and changing conditions to meet deadlines.
• Capable of resolving issues at the most basic level while understanding when to escalate or adjust priorities.
• Experience in balancing both technical and practical needs.
• Competency in applying accounting principles and/or federal and state regulations in day-to-day decision-making processes.
• A positive attitude and the ability to foster a collaborative and pleasant work environment, as all responsibilities are team-oriented.
• Ability to navigate throughout the department, Clinic, and other organizational locations.
• Availability to work 8-10 hour days, with potential evening, weekend, and holiday shifts during peak periods, depending on departmental needs.
