This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Tennessee.
• Accountable for coding in critical access hospitals, encompassing emergency department services, infusions, Critical Access Hospital Specialty Clinic, professional fees, and Rural Health Clinic.
• Ensure medical claims are coded accurately and promptly, optimizing reimbursement for provided services.
• Receive and assess charge entry data from various practice locations.
• Detect and investigate any incomplete or missing charges.
• Abstract clinical data; convert medical documentation into diagnoses and procedural codes using current coding and classification systems.
• Arrange codes in accordance with established guidelines.
• Keep up-to-date with coding regulations and rules set by the AMA, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and other payers.
• Maintain proficient knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR) along with other necessary systems to fulfill job responsibilities.
• Report issues to management, including those related to payers, systems, or escalated accounts.
• Identify trends in medical necessity denials and offer recommendations for resolution.
• May undertake additional billing tasks such as claim submissions, following up on unpaid claims, and resolving denials.
• Engage in departmental meetings, in-service programs, and continuing education initiatives.
• Exhibit a professional demeanor towards patients, visitors, physicians, office personnel, and hospital staff.
• Ensure confidentiality of patient information, adhering to relevant policies and procedures.
• Execute other responsibilities as assigned.
• High School Diploma or GED - mandatory
• Associate Degree - preferred
• Certification as a Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) - mandatory
• Three to five years of experience in emergency room coding, infusion coding, and specialty clinic procedure coding - preferred
• Two years of experience with formal coding training - considered
• Proficient knowledge of medical terminology - mandatory
• Experience in Critical Access Hospital and/or Rural Health Clinic coding is advantageous
• Competency in Microsoft Office
• Proven strong verbal and written communication abilities
• Capability to navigate multiple client systems and manage competing priorities
• Passion for a remote teamwork setting
