This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Louisiana.
• Engaging in Coding/Abstracting tasks.
• Establishes the order of diseases, diagnoses, and surgeries. The Coder proficiently assigns the correct codes to patient records, which includes ambulatory surgery, treatment type admission, observation, emergency room, and outpatient lab/radiology, utilizing the ICD-10-CM system and CPT-4 guidelines. Extracts data elements such as discharge disposition, Consultants, Anesthesiologists, Operating Room Assistants, and confirms that the appropriate status has been allocated to outpatient records.
• Coordinates with relevant HIM staff members when records with incomplete information are discovered. This effort supports effective health information management and guarantees the delivery of high-quality health care services.
• Aids the Business Office and external agencies in clarifying coding related to reimbursement matters. Manages all inquiries promptly.
• Maintains an accuracy rate of no less than 93% as per internal and/or external review and productivity benchmarks, engages in identifying and resolving issues, and assists in data collection and chart audits.
• Exhibits competencies in service to our patients/customers of all ages by gathering information aligned with customer needs. Communicates positively and professionally about colleagues, physicians, and the facility.
• Attends mandatory meetings and seeks to enhance the quality of discussions by actively participating in meeting topics. Engages in educational programs, in-services, and training sessions as necessary. When suitable, the Coder imparts their own expertise to others to enhance the education and personal development offered to new personnel, volunteers, and interns.
• Undertakes additional duties as assigned or requested.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience in medical coding.
• Certification as a Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A) through AAPC may be accepted in lieu of the required experience.
