This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.
• Accountable for the precise assignment of E&M, ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes, along with modifiers, derived from medical record documentation into the Government computer systems.
• Extracts and abstracts pertinent information from both paper and electronic medical records for special studies and audits, both internal and external.
• Collaborates with MTF staff to ensure documentation is clear and supports the coding assignments.
• Provides education to MTF staff through individual or group in-services and training sessions.
• Maintains a report of delinquent records to facilitate the timely completion of work within established thresholds.
• Works closely with the Coding Supervisor/auditor throughout the audit process.
• Ensures that all essential components of the medical record relevant to coding are present, accurate, and compliant with DoD and JCAHO standards.
• Utilizes Coding Compliance-Editor software to guarantee accurate coding of records.
• May also be tasked with the assignment of precise ICD diagnoses, CPT, HCPCS, modifiers, and quantities from medical record documentation for inpatient professional services (IPPS encounters - also referred to as rounds).
• Conducts focus audits as assigned by the MTF.
• Submits all audit spreadsheets to the supervisor weekly, ensuring they are free from discrepancies as required.
• Provides a monthly report detailing activities for the month, such as audit results, training conducted, and feedback as requested by the MTF.
• Must participate in scheduled coding and auditing meetings and training sessions mandated by the MTF.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• The position necessitates exceptional computer and communication skills for effective interactions with providers and staff.
• A solid understanding of anatomy/physiology, disease processes, medical terminology, coding guidelines (outpatient and ambulatory surgery), documentation requirements, familiarity with medications, and reimbursement guidelines; experience with encoders is also essential.
• The candidate should possess the ability to manage multiple projects and effectively prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
• Preferred qualifications include Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Coder Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coder Specialist Physician (CCS-P), alongside a minimum of three years of experience in the outpatient setting (physician's office or ambulatory care centers) within the last five years.
• Education and certification must be accredited by an institution recognized by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and/or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
• A minimum of one of the following qualifications is required: an associate’s degree in health information management or a university certificate in medical coding, OR at least 20 quarter/30 semester hours of university/college credit that includes relevant coursework such as anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information management, and/or pharmacology.
• Contract medical coders are required to obtain the necessary continuing education hours at no cost to the government to maintain current and valid national certifications for the position.
