Building Construction Plans Examiner I/II

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Review construction documents to ensure compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC).

• Assess and approve construction documents for adherence to the International Building Code, International Residential Code, and VUSBC.

• Interpret and enforce relevant codes, regulations, and ordinances.

• Perform field inspections to evaluate buildings and systems.

• Offer code consultation services to builders, developers, engineers, property owners, architects, and various governmental agencies.

• Act as a representative for the division and the County in meetings and public hearings.

• Create, engage in, and advocate for code change proposals at local, state, and national levels.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in a discipline related to construction, buildings, or a similar field.

• Relevant experience in building engineering/construction, which includes working with construction plans.

• Additional qualifying experience in specialized areas (such as plumbing, construction, mechanical, or electrical engineering) may be considered as a substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

• Preference may be extended to candidates possessing one or more of the following:

• A Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field.

• Familiarity with the International Building Code and International Residential Code.

• Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction documents, specifications, codes, regulations, and/or ordinances.

• Experience in addressing public inquiries.

• Certification from the International Code Council (ICC) or as a Virginia Residential or Commercial Building Plans Examiner.

• Certification as a Residential or Commercial Building Plans Examiner is mandatory within 12 months of employment.
