This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Develop, enhance, and expand backend services that facilitate real-time multiplayer gaming.
• Utilize GKE, Helm, and Kubernetes for managing deployments and autoscaling of stateful game servers.
• Enhance observability through monitoring dashboards, alerting (using Prometheus/Grafana or GCP Cloud Monitoring), and incident response protocols.
• Scale distributed databases such as MongoDB and PostgreSQL under high concurrent load conditions.
• Optimize Kafka event streaming for player interactions, game state management, and inter-service communications.
• Proactively identify and mitigate bottlenecks to prevent player-facing issues.
• Enhance service resilience and avert cascading failures across systems.
• Collaborate on architectural strategies with a small, experienced engineering team.
• Practical experience with Kubernetes, preferably GKE, in a production environment.
• Proven experience in scaling distributed systems under load.
• Familiarity with at least some of the following technologies: MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Kafka, Redis, and pub/sub systems.
• Comfortable working with monitoring stacks, including Prometheus, Grafana, Alertmanager, or similar tools.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code methodologies (Terraform, Helm).
• Ability to work independently.
• A portfolio available on GitHub or LinkedIn.
• Background in developing game backends or real-time multiplayer systems.
• A strong interest in MMO gaming experiences and a thorough understanding of MMO products available in the market.
• Experience working with stateful server architectures, specifically dedicated game servers.
• Experience in orchestrating custom game servers on Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with Istio service mesh technology.
• Previous employment at a game studio, particularly in live service or MMO titles.
• A passion for tackling the unique challenges associated with operating a large-scale MMO.
• Fully remote position, requiring significant overlap with UK (GMT/BST) hours.
• Initial contract for 4-8 weeks, with a likelihood of extension after launch.
• Full-time is preferred, but flexible arrangements may be available for exceptional candidates.
