This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Florida.
• Ownership of the assignment desk and workflow management
• Collaborate closely with the Publisher to develop the monthly editorial strategy and determine coverage priorities
• Assign and monitor stories from initial pitch through to publication, ensuring writers are aligned with project scope and deadlines
• Facilitate collaborative story-planning discussions with both staff and freelance contributors to cultivate compelling hyperlocal ideas
• Editing and quality assurance
• Review and perform line edits on all content before the copy editing stage (focusing on clarity, structure, voice, accuracy, and flow)
• Ensure that stories adhere to editorial standards regarding fairness, sourcing, and local relevance
• Occasionally contribute high-impact stories, features, or opinion pieces as required
• Team coordination and production oversight
• Supervise our staff writer while coordinating a small team of contributors and freelance writers
• Periodically recruit and onboard new freelance writers to adapt to changing editorial needs
• Collaborate closely with the graphic design team to facilitate final page production and ensure a smooth transition to print
• Keep the issue on schedule and help guarantee that we consistently meet monthly print deadlines
• Community engagement
• Establish and nurture working relationships with elected officials, business leaders, and community stakeholders to support reporting and advance the publication’s editorial objectives
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in editing within a newsroom or news publishing setting (community/local preferred)
• Strong news judgment with the ability to shape angles, tighten structure, and enhance clarity quickly
• Exceptional line-editing skills and a keen attention to detail
• Proficient in AP Style with the ability to uphold consistent house style
• Demonstrated capability in managing writers and freelancers through clear feedback and consistent follow-up
• Comfortable navigating print workflows and collaborating with designers to meet page closure requirements
• Highly organized, deadline-focused, and composed under pressure—particularly during the final production week
• Knowledge of Miami neighborhoods, civic issues, and local government
• Proficiency in Spanish
• Experience with Content Management Systems (CMS) and fundamental editorial workflow tools.
