Associate Editor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Oversee reporters during afternoon shifts

• Supervise the development of evening copy and newsletters

• Craft engaging headlines

• Oversee project budgets

• Negotiate contracts with freelance contributors

• Manage the editorial calendar, ensuring adherence to deadlines and quality standards

• Assist in the design and execution of CNO’s project initiatives

• Act as the Editor-in-Chief during periods of vacation and illness

• Source captivating visuals and enhance photography and photo editing tools

• Prepare stories for social media platforms

• Provide editorial coverage during vacations for editors and the newsletter editor

• Recruit, hire, and oversee journalists and editors

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 7 years of experience in journalism

• Strong knowledge of politics, climate change, and disinformation

• Exceptional editorial skills with a proven history of impactful storytelling

• Experience in a leadership or management position

• Proven ability to collaborate effectively and manage deadlines

• Strong skills in headline writing, story packaging, and copy editing

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment with adaptability, professionalism, and kindness

• Submission of a resume, cover letter, and three writing samples is required

• Candidates must familiarize themselves with Canada’s National Observer, explore the website, sign up for newsletters, subscribe for one month, register for Civic Searchlight, and utilize it prior to applying
