This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands.
• Spearheading the identification and scoping of AI/ML applications relevant to (T)BMD fire-control coordination and IAMD operational challenges.
• Analyzing existing NIAG SG300 reports and TBMD simulation data to create a foundational understanding and pinpoint pertinent datasets.
• Crafting a foundational data architecture and methodological framework for the ethical deployment of advanced AI technologies within the BMD sector, guided by NATO’s present AI architecture and immediate plans.
• Performing feasibility assessments on emerging AI/ML computational techniques (including machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and large language models) and evaluating their potential operational advantages for identified use cases.
• Creating and testing AI/ML software prototypes and demonstrators for chosen BMD use cases at the NATO UNCLASSIFIED level within the NATO Software Factory (NSF). All development will occur in NSF, utilizing existing LLMs as necessary to facilitate migration to NS.
• Preparing and delivering subject matter (BMD AI) briefings, expert reports, and documentation related to feasibility studies pertinent to the project.
• Developing and outlining a responsible AI framework aligned with the NATO Principles of Responsible AI Use (PRU), as detailed in the NATO AI Strategy, specifically customized for the BMD context. This effort should adhere to NATO ambitions and align with ongoing initiatives as needed.
• Organizing and conducting subject matter (BMD AI) training and knowledge transfer sessions for the NCIA project team and the broader NCIA community, emphasizing the BMD case. NCIA will provide currently available AI training materials to the contractor team.
• Over 10 years of professional experience in software engineering, AI/ML system development, or related technical fields, showcasing expertise across the entire software development lifecycle.
• Practical knowledge in AI/ML frameworks and tools, such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, or similar. Proven experience in implementing and assessing ML models in production or research settings.
• Strong capabilities in software development using one or more of the following languages and frameworks: Python, Java, C#/.NET, JavaScript/TypeScript. Familiarity with backend frameworks like Spring Boot, or comparable enterprise-grade platforms.
• Experience in designing and developing distributed software architectures, including microservices, RESTful APIs, cloud-native components (AWS, Azure, or similar), and containerized deployments using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Background in research project management, encompassing contributions to research proposals, scientific studies, project planning, and reporting in a technical or academic environment.
• Proven ability to design, implement, and assess AI/ML software prototypes and demonstrators, including the documentation of technical outcomes in reports and specifications.
• Experience working within project teams that include international stakeholders, both military and civilian, and adapting to varied organizational environments.
• Background in contributing to NIAG (NATO Industrial Advisory Group) studies or similar NATO science and technology initiatives.
• The candidate must hold the nationality of one of the NATO member nations.
