AI Strategist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands.

📋 Description

• Overseeing the identification and scoping of AI/ML use cases relevant to (T)BMD fire-control coordination as well as IAMD operational challenges.

• Analyzing existing NIAG SG300 reports and TBMD simulation data to create a foundational understanding and pinpoint pertinent datasets.

• Creating a foundational data architecture and methodological framework for the ethical implementation of advanced AI technologies in the BMD sector, guided by NATO’s current AI framework and near-term objectives.

• Performing feasibility analyses on emerging AI/ML computational techniques (including machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and large language models) and evaluating their potential operational advantages for identified use cases.

• Designing and assessing AI/ML software prototypes and demonstrators for selected BMD use cases at NATO UNCLASSIFIED level within the NATO Software Factory (NSF). All development will occur in NSF and utilize existing LLMs when appropriate to facilitate migration to NS.

• Preparing and delivering subject matter (BMD AI) presentations, expert reports, and feasibility study documentation pertinent to the project.

• Formulating and documenting a responsible AI framework that aligns with NATO's Principles of Responsible AI Use (PRU) as outlined in the NATO AI Strategy, specifically tailored for the BMD context. This initiative should conform to NATO aspirations and integrate with ongoing work on this topic as necessary.

• Organizing and conducting subject matter (BMD AI) training and knowledge transfer sessions for the NCIA project team and the broader NCIA community, concentrating on the BMD case. NCIA will provide current AI training materials to the contractor team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 15 years of professional experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, signal processing, or related areas, including direct involvement in the research and development of AI/ML systems.

• Proven expertise in deep learning science and technology, covering architectures such as DNNs, CNNs, RNNs, LSTMs, Transformers, and generative models, with applications to real-world challenges.

• A strong history of managing and leading AI/ML research initiatives, encompassing proposal writing coordination, project management, researcher supervision, and collaboration with industry and public-sector partners.

• Experience in conducting feasibility analyses, technology assessments, and technology roadmapping for AI/ML solutions in either research or applied contexts.

• Established ability to convey complex AI/ML concepts into actionable insights for non-specialist audiences, including military and defense-sector stakeholders.

• Experience in collaboration with academic institutions, including supervision or co-supervision of PhD candidates and management of collaborative research programs funded by NATO, national, or EU entities.

• Demonstrated experience in responsible AI principles, including ethics, explainability, fairness, and governance in AI/ML system design.

• Previous experience working with or providing consultancy services to defense, security, or governmental organizations on AI/ML-related subjects.

• Candidate must hold the nationality of one of the NATO member nations.
