This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +11 more states.
• Lead multiple AI coding agents simultaneously to design, develop, test, and deploy Android features using Kotlin in accordance with the Android SDK.
• Take full responsibility for a specific segment of the Android application — covering discovery, scoping, architecture, implementation, quality assurance, release, monitoring, and iteration.
• Implement an “engineer-as-a-team” workflow — generate agents for specification drafting, code generation, test creation, code review, refactoring, documentation, and bug triage, then merge, evaluate, and launch.
• Establish and advocate a strong perspective on what constitutes quality Android code within Grove’s architecture (including Clean Architecture, multi-module Gradle with base/middleware/data/app, MVVM with DataBinding, Koin for Dependency Injection, Coroutines/Flow, Moshi) to enable critical review of AI outputs and reject subpar submissions.
• Create prompts, evaluations, and tools that ensure AI-assisted mobile development is systematic and quantifiable, rather than artisanal.
• Set up automation that completes the feedback loop: including Fastlane lanes, CircleCI checks, AppCenter/Play Console distribution, device test farms, telemetry-driven rollback, and AI-enhanced review gates.
• Influence architectural decisions with AI as a research and prototyping collaborator — investigate multiple options in a single day rather than a week, such as the integration of Jetpack Compose into a DataBinding/XML codebase.
• Collaborate with fellow engineers on architectural decisions and trade-offs — present designs for review prior to deployment. Gather business context from product managers, designers, and platform engineers; avoid making assumptions in isolation.
• Independently oversee production health — utilize Sentry, Datadog, Cloudflare, and Firebase to evaluate system health, address incidents, and prioritize your own tasks without prompt. You manage the queue; you don’t wait for direction on what needs attention.
• Mentor the Heady contractor team on AI-native workflows and disseminate insights with mobile colleagues.
• Address Sentry crashes, implement hotfixes, and investigate root causes of incidents using AI-assisted analysis and remediation (we currently utilize Sentry’s auto-fix agent — you’ll enhance its capabilities).
• 5–8 years of professional Android development experience with a portfolio showcasing successful consumer applications at scale.
• Proven, native fluency with contemporary AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Codex, agentic workflows) — able to discuss a feature you delivered where AI executed the majority of coding while you coordinated the process.
• Strong, discerning taste in Kotlin and modern Android architecture (Clean Architecture, MVVM, multi-module Gradle, Koin for Dependency Injection, Coroutines/Flow, Moshi) — and a well-defined viewpoint on the introduction of MVI or Compose.
• Comfortable working within a DataBinding/XML codebase currently, with the insight to initiate a gradual Compose migration when beneficial (rather than opting for a complete rewrite).
• Experience integrating with REST + JSON:API-style backends and the Shopify Buy/Checkout SDKs at a consumer scale.
• A tendency to take ownership of end-to-end outcomes rather than transferring tasks at team boundaries — balanced with the discernment to know when to involve another engineer for architectural review or business context validation.
• Truly autonomous in your work: you independently review Sentry/Datadog/Firebase/Cloudflare dashboards, prioritize your tasks, and do not require a manager to highlight urgent issues.
• Proficient in crafting prompts, evaluations, and guardrails — you view AI as a system to engineer, not merely a search tool.
• Excellent written communication skills — articulate specifications clearly, conduct thorough reviews, and clarify decisions to colleagues. You will lead asynchronous standups, design reviews, and Slack debugging sessions with a distributed team.
• A cooperative and humble attitude — orchestration thrives when you prioritize results over recognition and embrace constructive design critiques from peers.
• Competitive benefits - medical, vision, dental
• Equity - shared success is core to our mission
• Flexible Paid Time Off - we care most about results
• Free VIP membership and 50% employee discount
• Working for a company that believes a small group of people can change the world for the better by creating products and funding initiatives that help the planet!
