AI Engineering Team Lead

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Spain.

📋 Description

• Lead and guide a cross-functional engineering team, fostering an environment of collaboration, innovation, and ongoing improvement, with a strong emphasis on AI integration.

• Spearhead the design, implementation, and advancement of AI-driven solutions, particularly AI agents, to optimize software development processes, enhance developer productivity, and improve operational efficiency.

• Serve as a hands-on technical leader, actively participating in system design, code evaluations, and the creation of AI-enhanced capabilities within the platform.

• Identify and prioritize significant opportunities to utilize AI throughout the software development lifecycle, including code creation, testing, debugging, incident analysis, and documentation.

• Design and implement scalable and secure systems that merge traditional backend engineering with AI elements (e.g., LLM integrations, RAG pipelines, agent-based workflows).

• Collaborate with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to outline AI use cases that are aligned with company objectives and deliver measurable outcomes.

• Establish best practices for creating, assessing, and maintaining AI systems in production, focusing on observability, performance, cost management, and reliability.

• Promote the use of AI tools and methodologies across engineering teams, acting as a mentor and facilitator for developers to effectively utilize AI in their daily tasks.

• Ensure that AI implementations adhere to security and regulatory standards (e.g., PCI DSS, GDPR, DORA), especially regarding sensitive financial information.

• Address technical risks associated with both conventional systems and AI components, ensuring the platform remains stable, resilient, and trustworthy.

• Contribute directly to the development of high-quality, high-performance software solutions, maintaining a strong hands-on approach.

• Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in production settings, including those involving AI systems and agent-based workflows.

• Lead technical decision-making, balancing innovation in AI with long-term scalability, maintainability, and business impact.

• Cultivate a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability within technical teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline (equivalent experience is also considered).

• A collaborative mindset with the capability to work across different functions with Product, DevOps, and Security teams.

• Over 7 years of professional experience in software engineering, including:

• 6+ years of experience primarily using Java as the programming language.

• 4+ years of experience leading hybrid engineering teams (both in-house and outsourced).

• Proven background in the payment industry, fintech, banking, or financial services, with a strong understanding of high-availability systems, regulatory constraints, and secure architectures.

• Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools and coding agents (e.g., Cursor, kilo.ai, warp.dev, Claude Code, or similar), with the capability to integrate them effectively into real-world engineering workflows.

• Strong aptitude for applying AI to real engineering challenges, particularly in:

• Enhancing developer productivity (code generation, testing, documentation)

• Automating engineering workflows

• Conducting incident analysis and debugging support

• Extensive expertise in software architecture, microservices, and cloud solutions using AWS.

• Utilizing AI Agents to implement Test-Driven Development (TDD) and behavior-driven testing methodologies, ensuring robust, maintainable code.

• Profound understanding and practical application of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles, including SOLID design, Clean Architecture, and advanced software design patterns.

• Advanced skills in Web/API environments, including:

• HTTP protocols

• Designing and consuming RESTful services

• Creating efficient, secure, and high-performance APIs

• Proficiency in database design and optimization (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, or NoSQL databases).

• Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, Google Cloud Run, AWS Lambda).

• Exceptional problem-solving abilities and the capacity to make data-driven decisions in a fast-paced environment.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to educate and mentor engineers in AI adoption.

• High level of ownership and initiative, with the capacity to proactively identify opportunities and drive initiatives from start to finish.

• **Extra bonus if:**

• Experience with NodeJs or Python is advantageous but not required.

• Relevant certifications in cloud platforms, such as AWS.

• Experience with modern Java frameworks (e.g., Quarkus) and native compilation using GraalVM, focusing on building high-performance, low-latency services.
