This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia, +1 more state.
• Guide, motivate, and inform students regarding recommended academic pathways to advance through their academic programs.
• Engage with students remotely through various channels such as phone, chat, email, webinars, videos, social media, and others.
• Cultivate relationships with prospective, current, and returning students while representing the university.
• Address inquiries related to academic advising, programs, policies, campus navigation, and student concerns.
• Conduct outreach to offer advice and guidance on subsequent steps.
• Clearly document all student interactions.
• Review requests for degree plan changes and provide advice on recommended paths based on credit impact, completion time, and student planning.
• Implement suitable academic advising strategies, including inquisitive, appreciative, developmental, and prescriptive advising.
• Monitor student behavioral trends and support targeted outreach initiatives or process modifications.
• Advise on specific student populations and programs.
• Encourage and guide students toward successful completion of their programs.
• Meet service-level agreements and departmental service expectations.
• Evaluate processes and policies, providing recommendations for improvements.
• Participate in professional development and engage with other university departments on behalf of students.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
• A conferred Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills are essential.
• Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is highly preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including influencing, persuasion, elicitation, and active listening.
• Familiarity with student development theory is important.
• Excellent customer service skills and student support abilities.
• Capacity to advise effectively in ambiguous and unstructured situations.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Capability for rational and objective decision-making.
• Proficiency in navigating multiple systems and adapting to ongoing technological changes.
• A positive and optimistic attitude.
• Creativity and critical thinking skills.
• Strong problem-solving abilities.
• Flexibility to adjust quickly to changes.
• At least one year of professional office experience, preferably in a collegiate or academic advising context.
• Knowledge of undergraduate and graduate student development theories.
• Understanding of academic advising theories and best practices.
• Experience in influencing, informing, and persuading students on complex academic issues is a plus.
• Prior experience working with students from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds is desirable.
• Availability to work Monday to Thursday from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM is required.
