Technical Gameplay Designer – Player Abilities, Combat

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Utilize Unreal Engine, incorporating Blueprints and various tools to create, prototype, and refine player abilities.

• Develop and sustain gameplay features from initial concept to final polish while collaborating closely with engineering and other technical design teams.

• Conduct playtesting, tuning, and enhancement of abilities that impact combat, traversal, exploration, social interactions, and player expression, fostering engaging and clear multiplayer experiences.

• Collaborate with leadership and management to align on creative objectives and desired results.

• Take ownership of the design and iteration of player-facing abilities and modifiers associated with weapons, tools, items, armor, and related systems.

• Work alongside cross-disciplinary partners, including engineering, animation, audio, art, and VFX, to align abilities with combat, traversal, progression, social objectives, and technical limitations.

• Balance and fine-tune gameplay features while considering multiplayer dynamics and emergent player behavior.

• Champion the player experience, ensuring that abilities remain intuitive, expressive, and enjoyable over time.


⛳️ Requirements

• A strong passion for systemic gameplay and the creation of meaningful player expression through combinatorial and emergent gameplay mechanics.

• Senior-level expertise in designing gameplay mechanics, abilities, or progression features in released games.

• Technical proficiency in Unreal Engine, including Blueprint scripting or gameplay systems frameworks.

• A robust understanding of combat design fundamentals, even if combat has not been your primary focus.

• Excellent collaboration and communication abilities, with the skill to clearly convey design intent and trade-offs.

• Thoughtful playtesting and iteration practices, balancing creative ambitions with system integrity and player experience.

• Applicants must be legally permitted to work in the United States or Canada. Gardens cannot assist with work authorization or visas. Candidates must also be prepared to work within North American time zones.
