Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Establish and take ownership of the technical strategy for test infrastructure throughout all of Coinbase engineering, prioritizing speed of feedback as the primary design constraint.

• Develop and maintain essential Developer Infrastructure - Test services, including test execution orchestration, intelligent test selection, parallel sharding, flaky-test detection and suppression, as well as test result storage and analysis.

• Consistently minimize the duration from "code written" to "test results received" — every moment saved on test feedback accumulates across thousands of engineers and pull requests daily.

• Actively reduce the flakiness rate to ensure that test signals are inherently reliable, allowing engineers to avoid wasting time re-running tests or doubting results.

• Take full ownership of your systems from start to finish — including Service Level Objectives (SLOs), observability, and being on-call — maintaining a zero-tolerance policy for correctness issues.

• Collaborate closely with engineering teams across Coinbase (your clients) to identify areas where test infrastructure is hindering their progress and implement solutions.

• Mentor engineers within Developer Infrastructure - Test and DevInfra, establish technical standards that extend beyond your immediate work, and influence how the organization addresses test infrastructure challenges.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in building and managing production software, with a strong foundation in distributed systems and proficiency in a primary programming language like Go (or similar).

• Proven history of defining and delivering technical strategies for foundational systems — not just implementing features, but establishing directions that other teams rely on.

• Extensive hands-on experience in test infrastructure: large-scale test execution, flaky-test detection, test selection, sharding, or test result analysis.

• Strong operational instincts — you prioritize reliability, security, and observability, and your systems embody these values.

• A proven track record of driving intricate, cross-team technical projects to completion — influencing direction and timelines without requiring direct authority over involved personnel.

• A customer-centric approach: your success metrics are based on the impact your systems have on the engineers who utilize them.

• Demonstrates the capability to responsibly leverage generative AI tools and copilots (e.g., LibreChat, Gemini, Glean) in daily workflows, continuously adapting as tools evolve, and applying human-in-the-loop practices to produce business-ready outputs while driving measurable enhancements in efficiency, cost, and quality.
