This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• At Code for America, our software engineers engage in every phase of our product lifecycle, including prototyping, design, feature development based on user feedback, and operating technical systems at scale.
• Staff Software Engineers play a crucial role in supporting organization-wide technical initiatives and act as internal champions and subject matter experts in specific technology domains, tools, and processes.
• This position will report to our Senior Director of Engineering and is anticipated to require travel of no more than 10% of the time.
• Each Staff Engineer at Code for America specializes in a specific area, serving as a Subject Matter Expert in various contexts and discussions throughout the organization.
• Develop innovative features that enable users to navigate government services more easily and ensure a dignified experience.
• Create automated tests and establish monitoring strategies to maintain a high level of service quality.
• Implement minimal features to facilitate learning, and subsequently refine features for scalability once they have been validated.
• Contribute to Engineering’s culture of documentation by producing quality materials for both internal and external audiences.
• Be an approachable collaborator and mentor for fellow software engineers in your area of expertise.
• A minimum of 10 years of full-stack web development experience, with extensive expertise in system architecture, data modeling, and API design.
• At least 6 years of experience in developing and supporting multilingual web applications.
• Over 6 years of experience working with Agile Software Development methodologies such as Scrum, XP, TDD, or BDD.
• Proven expert-level skills in applied computer science and web fundamentals, encompassing data structures, design patterns, and application architecture.
• A strong enthusiasm for collaboration with peers and a commitment to providing technical and professional mentorship.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Expert understanding and experience in engaging with cross-functional peers, translating conversations into actionable tasks.
• This Staff Software Engineer role requires specialized expertise in:
• Javascript / Typescript / web-based software engineering, with a focus on browser experiences.
• Proficiency in JavaScript and its derivatives, including modern frameworks (React, Vue, etc.) as well as classic patterns and tools.
• A solid grasp of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
• Demonstrated experience conducting experience evaluations or audits for accessibility.
• Understanding of UX patterns and principles, translating product and UX requirements into actionable tasks.
• Experience in evaluating, investigating, and optimizing client experience and code performance in front-end code.
• Leadership and team members who uphold a strong work ethic and values, demonstrating respect and care for one another.
• A collaborative, cross-functional, diligent, and positive work environment.
• Provision of a laptop for work use.
• A one-time payment of $700 for remote environment setup; a $200 stipend included in the first paycheck and up to $500 reimbursement in line with our equipment policy.
• Monthly reimbursement of $50 for cell phone and/or internet expenses.
• An annual stipend of $500 (per calendar year) for professional development, prorated at the time of hire.
• Up to $500 of professional development funds can be carried over each year, with a maximum rollover limit of $1000.
• Training and resources for staff required to utilize AI in their roles, alongside opportunities for employees to acquire AI-related skills for job and career advancement.
• Employees receive a 100% employer match on the first 3% of their contributions.
• Employees with 3 or more years of service enjoy an additional 50% match on contributions between 3% and 5%, resulting in a maximum employer contribution of 5%.
• At least one no-cost health insurance option for full-time employees covering employee-only plans.
• A minimum of 80% coverage for dependent insurance costs.
• Code for America employees are eligible to work remotely across the United States, provided their main residence is within the country.
• Full-time employees are expected to work 40 hours per week, from Monday to Friday.
• Collaborative working hours: we strive to schedule all internal meetings between 10 AM and 3 PM PT, expecting all Code for America staff to be available during these designated hours.
• Open personal time off (subject to manager approval), a minimum of 14 paid holidays, and an organizational-wide closure from Christmas Day through New Year's Day.
• Paid sick leave of up to 96 hours annually.
• 17 weeks of paid parental and family leave.
• A 3-week paid sabbatical after 5 years of service.
