
Staff Software Engineer – Apache Iceberg

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.
• Shape the future of data architecture by playing a pivotal role in Apache Iceberg, the open-source initiative that is setting the standard for modern data lakes.
• Enhance performance across the Cloudera stack's engines by introducing new features in Iceberg and collaborating with other teams to utilize them in queries.
• Partner with Product Managers and Customers to identify opportunities for improving Iceberg for Modern Data Lakes.
• Create new features in Java on contemporary platforms.
• Acquire a comprehensive understanding and in-depth technical expertise of components throughout the Cloudera stack, particularly focusing on Iceberg, which you will apply in your daily activities.
• Engage in work involving massive-scale distributed systems, ranging from hundreds to thousands of nodes in production clusters, leveraging Iceberg's capabilities for managing PB-scale data architectures.
• Troubleshoot system-level deployment challenges, conduct root cause analysis, perform system test evaluations, and address failures.
• Collaborate effectively with other team members and stakeholders.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, with 6+ years of experience; OR a Master’s degree with 4-6 years of experience; OR a PhD with 2-4 years of experience.
• Proficient programmer with a strong foundation in data structures and algorithms.
• Experience in systems design and development.
• Strong proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Java, Scala, C++, or Python, with a willingness to learn the languages utilized in our projects.
• Enthusiastic about programming, with a commitment to clean coding practices, attention to detail, and a focus on quality.
• Exceptional ability to research and independently resolve issues without constant oversight.
• Capable of working effectively both independently and as a member of an international and virtual team.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Open-minded attitude and a desire to learn new concepts while contributing to the creation of outstanding products.
