Staff Engineer – Identity

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the technical strategy — Establish the architecture for Identity's essential systems (Identity Store, headless verification platform, fraud detection infrastructure), make decisions regarding build-vs-buy-vs-partner, and identify technical risks before they impact customers.

• Lead the development of new platforms — Design and implement new systems such as the Identity Store, Networked Identity platform, and advanced fraud detection pipeline (including behavioral biometrics, deepfake discriminators, and adversarial training). Transition from a hosted-UI product to a headless-API and embedded-components platform.

• Foster cross-functional alignment — Act as the key technical voice in discussions regarding roadmaps and resource allocation. Collaborate with teams in ML, product, legal, and engineering across Risk, Fraud, Link, Connect, and Crypto to ensure that Identity's abstractions meet the comprehensive needs of Stripe's product landscape.

• Elevate technical standards — Establish engineering benchmarks across ML, backend, mobile, and front-end; lead design reviews; and mentor senior engineers on the necessary judgment for managing a high-stakes, customer-facing product.

• Operate with a sense of ownership — Take responsibility for the reliability, scalability, and security of the systems you design, including the observability and alerting mechanisms that detect model drift and shifts in fraud patterns before they affect customers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in a strategic technical leadership position.

• Proven experience leading engineering teams focused on API design, abstractions, frameworks, or client libraries (e.g., developing internal or external developer products).

• Demonstrated success in delivering practical solutions that drive business growth.

• Capability to navigate discussions from high-level strategic points to intricate coding details.

• Excels in an environment of high autonomy and responsibility.

• Excellent writing and in-person communication skills, with the ability to convey ideas clearly and persuasively.

• Strong problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, determination, and a growth-oriented mindset.

• Capacity to collaborate effectively with a diverse set of individuals, showing genuine care for each other and fostering a high level of psychological safety for all team members and partners.

• Familiarity with a variety of software languages and frameworks. Examples include:

• Languages: primarily Ruby and Typescript, with additional experience in Python, Scala, Java, Go, and SQL (Spark and Trino dialects).

• Frameworks: React, GraphQL, Kafka, Protobuf, Airflow, Bazel, Temporal.

• Others: Mongo, Splunk, Prometheus.
