Staff Backend Engineer – Grafana Enterprise

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Building trust with our extensive operator clientele to advance Grafana's "big tent" philosophy of data accessibility while achieving specific business goals.

• Leading the design and development of backend services, distributed systems, and enterprise-level features at scale.

• Promoting the continuous enhancement of our engineering culture through both words and actions.

• Managing projects from initial concept through the development lifecycle to their production deployment.

• Contributing to the scalability, reliability, security, and multi-tenancy of the Grafana platform, which is relied upon by some of the largest operators globally.

• Taking ownership of the operational health of our platform by engaging in weekday on-call rotations of 12 hours for 5 days and separate weekend rotations of 24 hours for 2 days. (We prioritize reducing operational loads.)

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive professional experience in developing production services, from conception through to operational deployment at scale.

• Solid foundation in distributed systems, including replication, consistency models, partitioning, fault tolerance, and the associated trade-offs of high-scale operations.

• Proven track record in designing and managing systems for large-scale, high-traffic, high-availability, or multi-tenant environments, ideally in infrastructure, observability, or software delivery platforms.

• Professional experience in building and utilizing gRPC/protobuf APIs and crafting clear service contracts across service boundaries.

• Strong database expertise, particularly with PostgreSQL and/or MySQL, encompassing schema design, query optimization, and large-scale schema migrations.

• Familiarity with large-scale CI/CD systems and build tools, including the design, operation, or integration of continuous delivery pipelines serving substantial engineering organizations or external operators.

• Proficiency in working with Kubernetes and containerized deployment environments, including strategies for managing stateful workloads and multi-tenant clusters.

• Background with observability tools such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus metrics, structured logging, and distributed tracing.

• Understanding of dependency injection patterns (e.g., Google Wire) and the principles of clean, testable service architecture.
