Staff Autonomy Engineer – Localization

πŸ“‹ Description

β€’ Design and oversee the creation of a production-quality, multimodal localization framework, incorporating Cameras, LiDAR, Radar, GNSS, and IMU data to achieve centimeter-level precision and high reliability.

β€’ Develop and execute advanced state estimation frameworks, including Factor Graphs or sliding-window optimization (e.g., GTSAM, Ceres), tailored for real-time capabilities and resilience against sensor degradation across various Operational Design Domains (ODDs).

β€’ Take responsibility for the localization integrity and safety approach. Create advanced uncertainty estimation and fault detection, isolation, and recovery (FDIR) systems to satisfy rigorous safety standards.

β€’ Lead the development of technical roadmaps for next-generation localization methods, such as map and sparse landmark-based localization (Vision/LiDAR/Radar), visual-inertial odometry (VIO), and wheel-inertial odometry.

β€’ Direct cross-functional system integration, establishing software and system requirements while defining technical interfaces and performance agreements (e.g., state estimation and uncertainty boundaries) between Localization and adjacent modules like Perception, Behavior, Policy, and Prediction.

β€’ Create comprehensive evaluation frameworks and metrics for localization effectiveness, encompassing pose accuracy, temporal consistency, and system-level dependability across various ODDs.

β€’ Champion significant feature development including high-level architecture design, code assessments, issue resolution, and technical troubleshooting.

β€’ Offer high-level technical guidance to both senior and junior engineers, performing thorough design and code assessments and promoting a culture of engineering excellence and rigorous validation.

β€’ Remain at the forefront of research, assessing and integrating innovative techniques in SLAM, deep-learned localization features, and large-scale map-matching to produce market-ready solutions.


⛳️ Requirements

β€’ Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline with a strong mathematical foundation in state estimation.

β€’ Over 10 years of industry experience in developing and implementing high-performance localization or state estimation systems for autonomous robots or vehicles, including at least 5 years in a lead/staff/principal technical role.

β€’ Proficiency in contemporary state estimation methodologies: In-depth understanding of probabilistic robotics, Factor Graphs or sliding-window optimization (e.g., GTSAM, Ceres), and Kalman filtering.

β€’ Advanced Sensor Fusion expertise: Proven experience in integrating various data sources including Cameras (Visual Odometry), LiDAR (ICP/NDT), Radar, IMU, and GNSS.

β€’ Strong C++ Programming skills: Expertise in modern C++ (14/17/20) within a Linux environment, emphasizing real-time constraints, multi-threading, and performance enhancement.

β€’ System Architecture experience: Background in designing modular, testable software architectures for safety-critical applications.

β€’ Leadership capabilities: Proven track record of steering technical roadmaps and architectural standards while mentoring senior engineers from inception through to fleet-wide deployment.
