Staff AI Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Spearhead the design and execution of intricate ML/AI systems from inception to deployment, taking ownership of architectural choices and guiding solutions from research to large-scale production.

• Develop and enhance scalable ML platforms, pipelines, and infrastructure that facilitate consistent and repeatable model development and deployment across various teams.

• Establish benchmarks for AI-centric engineering, utilizing tools such as Claude and Cursor proficiently and assisting the team in their effective adoption.

• Collaborate with product, engineering, and leadership teams to shape AI strategies and ensure that technical directions align with business objectives.

• Convert complex AI trade-offs, risks, and opportunities into clear narratives that facilitate informed decision-making among both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Conduct design reviews and technical discussions, raising standards for engineering excellence and fostering constructive challenges within the team.

• Define architectural and engineering standards for AI, providing insights on trade-offs, long-term impacts, and responsible AI practices.

• Mentor and develop junior and mid-level engineers, amplifying impact through coaching, code reviews, and collaborative problem-solving.

• Take responsibility for the most ambiguous and high-stakes projects, guiding them to production with a focus on reliability, cost-effectiveness, and safety.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of professional software engineering experience, including more than 4 years focused on production AI/ML systems and extensive hands-on experience in generative AI development.

• A strong background in software engineering (Python or similar) with a keen sense for designing scalable and maintainable systems.

• In-depth expertise with cloud platforms, particularly a comprehensive understanding of AWS services and AWS GenAI offerings.

• Proven ability to design and deliver complex agentic systems within production environments.

• Mastery of AI frameworks and orchestration tools.

• Significant experience with evaluation frameworks and observability tools for LLM applications, including the development of these capabilities when they are not already established.

• Comprehensive understanding of AI safety, responsible AI principles, defenses against prompt injection, and handling of personally identifiable information (PII).

• Extensive experience in constructing RAG pipelines: chunking strategies, embedding models, vector databases, and advanced retrieval techniques.

• Experience in API design, including the architecture and integration with both internal and external services at scale.

• Advanced expertise in cost optimization strategies: token economics, caching techniques, model routing, and quantization.

• Strong practical knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes for containerized deployments.

• Proven daily use and expert knowledge of AI-focused coding tools such as Claude Code and Cursor.
