Software Engineer, New Grad – Full Stack

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Develop features under the mentorship of senior engineers, including REST APIs, message-queue workers, AWS integrations, and the accompanying React + Material-UI admin pages, along with the necessary tests to support them.

• Troubleshoot bugs and enhance test coverage as you familiarize yourself with the codebase.

• Work on real tickets that have a genuine impact on customers, rather than trivial starter tasks.

• Refactor and tidy up code as you identify opportunities, receiving senior review and feedback to refine your judgement.

• Gain exposure to the entire stack, including backend services, frontend forms and dialogs, message queues, and cloud integrations, to discover areas you wish to specialize in.

• Create documentation in tandem with the code, rather than after the fact.

• Engage in regular pairing, ask questions freely, and contribute your unique perspective during code reviews.

⛳️ Requirements

• A recent graduate, someone about to graduate, or up to 1 year into your professional journey.

• A degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering is preferred; however, strong self-taught individuals with bootcamp experience and a portfolio or significant personal projects are also encouraged to apply.

• Strong foundational knowledge in Java or another strongly-typed language; some experience with React or a similar modern front-end framework is beneficial.

• Familiarity with version control, pull requests, code reviews, and writing tests, even if you are still learning what constitutes good test coverage.

• A strong desire to learn about distributed systems concepts, including queues, retries, idempotency, and dead-letter queues.

• Daily use of AI coding assistants, with an understanding that they are tools to enhance learning, not replacements for comprehending your code's functionality.

• Ability to write small, reviewable pull requests and a commitment to continual improvement in this area.
