• Develop and take ownership of the components within the rule evaluation engine — the core decision-making framework of Data Products — which includes crafting rules, scaling evaluations, and presenting results to downstream systems.
• Create backend services using Python (FastAPI) that manage high-throughput, low-latency evaluation tasks.
• Collaborate with event-driven infrastructure (such as Kafka or similar) to connect the engine with upstream data sources and downstream consumers.
• Design and refine data models that ensure auditability, versioning, and reproducibility of rule outcomes.
• Construct React interfaces that empower merchants and internal users to configure rules, review evaluations, and build trust in the system.
• Contribute across the full range of the Data Products team's initiatives—automating business rules, developing ML-based APIs, creating customer-facing analytics, and implementing intelligent recommendation systems.
• Work alongside Data Science, Analytics Engineering, and Product teams to translate analytical insights into actionable production decisions.
• Implement instrumentation in your work: develop meaningful tests, incorporate metrics and tracing, and utilize production data to confirm that changes are effective.
• Engage in team on-call duties and incident response for the services you manage.
• Participate in API design, service decomposition, and technical reviews across teams as you expand your ownership scope.
• Assist in onboarding new team members and promote knowledge sharing through code reviews, design documentation, and collaborative programming.
• Effectively leverage AI coding tools (Claude, Cursor) in your daily tasks and contribute to the evolution of team practices regarding these tools.
• Minimum of 6 years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 2 years of delivering production-ready full-stack features.
• Proficient in Python backend development; experience with FastAPI (or a similar async Python framework) is preferred.
• Practical experience with event-driven systems (Kafka or equivalent) in a production environment.
• Strong PostgreSQL expertise, encompassing schema design, indexing, and query optimization.
• Production-level experience with React, particularly in state management and backend API integration.
• Comfortable deploying features behind flags, instrumenting code for observability, and iterating based on real-world performance signals.
• Skilled in writing tests (both unit and integration) and viewing reliability as an integral part of the development process, rather than an afterthought.
• Excellent written communication skills; able to produce clear design documents, define feature scopes, and navigate cross-team challenges independently.
• Eager to learn about the domain — willing to deeply understand the shipping and logistics context to make informed product decisions.
• Comprehensive healthcare coverage for medical, dental, and vision (90% covered by the company, including dependents).
• Coverage for pets is also available!
• Flexible vacation policy allowing you to take as much time as needed & adaptable working hours.
• One week-long company-wide winter slowdown.
• 3 Volunteer Days Off (VTOs).
• Work-from-home stipend to help you establish your home office.
• Charity donation matching up to $100.
• Dedicated programs, coaching, tools, and resources for your professional and career development, along with an individual learning stipend for personal growth.
• Enjoy fun in-person team interactions through our Shippos Everywhere program, which includes regular team and company off-sites throughout the year, as well as local Shippos gatherings.
