This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Lead and mentor a team of Software Developers, promoting talent development, skill enhancement, and career progression.
• Collaborate within the technical leadership team to influence the roadmap and ensure the team comprehends the direction, priorities, and trade-offs involved.
• Cultivate a team culture where individuals share context, rigorously review each other's work, mentor one another, and take pride in the quality of their outputs.
• Actively participate in software development tasks, including design, implementation, debugging, code review, and technical decision-making.
• Establish high standards for engineering practices across development, delivery, security, testing, documentation, and operations.
• Keep projects on track by clarifying scope, decomposing work, managing dependencies, and identifying risks.
• Collaborate with product, QA, design, support, and other development teams to synchronize efforts and ensure technical plans align with actual user and business needs.
• Resolve complex issues, including production challenges, with occasional availability outside regular business hours when necessary (which is infrequent).
• Stay updated with relevant technologies and industry trends, particularly those that could enhance the product, codebase, or team operations.
• Promote the thoughtful application of AI-assisted development tools to boost productivity, code quality, documentation, and the overall developer experience.
• Assume additional technical leadership responsibilities as the team and business evolve.
• After 1 week: You will have been introduced to all Shift development teams.
• After 1 month: You will be familiar with our product and major initiatives.
• After 6 months: You will feel confident in your role and will be making significant contributions.
• A minimum of 7 years of professional software development experience, including significant expertise in C++, Objective-C, C, or similar systems-level languages.
• At least 3 years of experience leading or managing software developers, with responsibilities for coaching, providing feedback, delivery, and team well-being.
• Strong foundation in software engineering principles, including object-oriented design, debugging, code review, testing, and maintainable system architecture.
• Experience with large, intricate codebases where sound judgment, patience, and attention to detail are crucial.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools in everyday engineering tasks, along with the discernment to identify when they are beneficial and how to maintain quality, security, and maintainability.
• Comfortable navigating between hands-on development and people leadership, project planning, and cross-functional collaboration.
• Capable of breaking down ambiguous technical tasks, managing competing priorities, and steering projects to completion.
• Excellent communicator able to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
• Naturally collaborative but decisive when the team requires clarity or forward action.
• Comfortable collaborating with distributed teams across various time zones.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Previous experience with Chromium, a Chromium-based product, browser internals, or another large native desktop application (preferred).
• Familiarity with modern software delivery workflows (preferred).
• Experience with scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell (preferred).
• Understanding of web technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or TypeScript (preferred).
