Senior Staff Engineer, Open Source Server

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee the design and execution of key server functionalities, from concept to deployment.

• Assist in establishing the technical direction for various segments of the OSS Server team.

• Tackle challenges related to distributed systems, including task matching, scheduling, workflow execution, visibility, quotas, throttling, persistence, developer primitives, and workflow lifecycle features.

• Make informed trade-offs among reliability, performance, operability, product requirements, and open-source usability.

• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, cloud teams, and customer-facing teams to transform complex issues into clear technical strategies.

• Enhance our server development and operations through improved testing, observability, dashboards, alerts, runbooks, and documentation.

• Evaluate designs and code, mentor engineers, and guide the team in making sound technical decisions.

⛳️ Requirements

• 12+ years of experience in building and managing production distributed systems.

• Proven technical leadership experience, encompassing design leadership, team alignment, and steering complex projects to successful completion.

• Strong foundational knowledge in distributed systems, concurrency, fault tolerance, scheduling, and performance optimization.

• Experience with production-level programming in Go, Java, or a comparable backend language.

• Familiarity with high-scale or performance-sensitive systems, such as request serving paths, task queues, scheduling systems, streaming or replication pipelines, rate limiting, sharding, load balancing, workflow engines, or orchestration systems.

• Solid operational instincts, valuing reliability, observability, debugging, incident response, and the ease of system management.

• Experience in designing APIs, primitives, or platform features utilized by other developers.

• Background in working with open source systems or communities.

• Experience with cloud infrastructure, particularly on AWS, Azure, or GCP is advantageous.

• Familiarity with systems such as Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, ClickHouse, Cassandra, PostgreSQL, or MySQL is a plus.

• Experience with Kubernetes controllers, CRDs, KEDA, or Argo is a plus.
