This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Execute comprehensive engineering tasks, including platform components, refactoring, integrations, and impactful features, utilizing coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, or similar) and contemporary engineering practices to achieve a sustainable pace.
• Establish the technical benchmarks for the engineering team.
• Articulate and formalize the standards of effective agentic engineering at Marathon, encompassing specification-driven development workflows, agent steering documentation, custom Skills, MCP server architectures, subagent orchestration, and methodical context engineering.
• Consolidate these into shareable skills, plugins, templates, and internal documentation for other engineers to implement without the need for redundancy.
• Influence architectural strategies that encompass Engineering, Data, and Infrastructure.
• Collaborate with the Principal Architect and engineering leadership on systems design challenges that traverse team boundaries, lead ARB-level reviews, and apply solid fundamentals to API design, distributed systems, event-driven architectures, observability, and security within a HIPAA-compliant framework.
• Develop internal agents, MCP integrations, and RAG-supported applications that demonstrate clear return on investment.
• Apply agent development frameworks pragmatically, with careful evaluation, guardrails, and cost management.
• Shape both the development process and the end products.
• Work closely with engineering leaders, product partners, and internal stakeholders to define initiative scoping, sequencing, and tradeoff decisions.
• Provide product insight and technical judgment early in the decision-making process regarding whether a problem merits engineering resources, as well as during the execution phase.
• Mentor senior and staff-level engineers throughout the organization.
• Facilitate pairing sessions, design reviews, and knowledge-sharing events.
• Enhance agentic and AI-native engineering proficiency across Engineering, Data, and Infrastructure through collaborative work and leading by example.
• Function as a healthcare-aware engineer, adhering to PHI handling, BAA requirements, audit trails, clinical safety considerations, and regulated change management, while assisting teams in navigating these constraints efficiently.
• BS or MS in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• Over 10 years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial tenure at Senior, Staff, or Principal IC levels.
• Extensive expertise in systems design and architecture, including distributed systems, API design, event-driven patterns, data flow, observability, and security.
• Agentic capabilities should complement strong engineering fundamentals; we seek candidates with engineering experience rather than solely AI expertise.
• Practical experience with a modern engineering stack: cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP); strong proficiency in at least one of .NET, Python, or TypeScript and working knowledge of the others; containers and Kubernetes (EKS, AKS, GKE) or similar orchestrators; infrastructure-as-code (Terraform); CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or similar); modern observability tools; and data platforms like Snowflake and Kafka.
• Daily engagement with agentic engineering tools.
• Regular use of a major coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or equivalent) as a primary method of delivery, with hands-on experience managing context, orchestrating subagents, working with hooks, skills, and plugins, and understanding the failure modes of long-term agentic tasks.
• Familiarity with MCP — including both server consumption and authoring — and an understanding of how Skills, slash commands, and agent steering documents function as a context-engineering toolkit.
• Disciplined application of specification-driven development in real-world production settings.
• Practical experience with at least one agent development SDK or framework (such as OpenAI Agent SDK, LangGraph, or similar), enabling informed decisions regarding agent solutions.
• Understanding of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) patterns, including retrieval design, grounding, and the tradeoffs between RAG, fine-tuning, and longer-context methodologies.
• Proven ability to exert technical influence beyond individual contributions, through patterns, libraries, frameworks, internal tools, documentation, or mentorship that has been adopted and utilized by other engineers.
• Comfort with product-related tasks, including precise problem definition, direct communication with internal clients, MVP scoping, and decisive judgments about whether a problem warrants engineering investment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying technical tradeoffs to executives, clinicians, and junior engineers in an appropriate manner for each audience.
• Comprehensive Health & Wellness Benefits: Choice of two medical plans, two dental plans, and vision coverage, unlimited access to mental health benefits and EAP resources, rewards for challenges and healthy lifestyle initiatives.
• Family-Friendly & Reproductive Health Benefits: Support for family-building and hormonal health, along with paid parental leave.
• Time-Based Benefits: Generous PTO or FTO, paid holidays, and an additional day for personal matters.
• Financial Support: Company-paid basic life and disability insurance, supplemental life insurance, spending accounts, and a 401(k) with employer matching and graded vesting.
• Continuing Medical Education (CME) to maintain and enhance the knowledge, skills, and expertise of our health center teammates, as applicable.
