Senior Software Engineer – Guarded OS

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Operate and enhance the Elastic Build service, a Kubernetes + GitHub + Cloud Run pipeline that transforms package specifications into downloadable artifacts, thereby enhancing reliability, performance, resource utilization, and support for multiple architectures.

• Maintain and refine Melange, our package build tool, with an emphasis on usability, testing, patch management, and observability. The tool is largely feature-complete, focusing on hardening and instrumentation rather than adding new features.

• Design and implement automation for rebuild and review workflows, ensuring a human remains in the approval process while eliminating all steps that can be automated. Assist in shared library transitions through build-time and runtime dependency analysis.

• Develop monitoring, dashboards, and alerting systems. Create automated responses to common failure scenarios, allowing human attention to be reserved for unique issues.

• Define and execute a roadmap for build and update services within the OS team.

• Thoroughly document systems and minimize single points of knowledge.

• Contribute to distribution-level package updates and assist in keeping Chainguard OS current and secure.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 4 years of software engineering experience with backend or distributed systems.

• Proficient programming skills in Go, with comfort in writing production services, ideally including a Kubernetes operator or custom controller.

• Practical experience operating production services at scale, with a history of responding to real incidents, restoring service, and enhancing systems to avert future issues.

• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Cloud Run, and designing cloud-native services.

• Familiarity with GCP services (e.g., BigQuery, IAM, Cloud Logging).

• Experience with Terraform and CI/CD pipelines.

• Strong debugging and problem-solving capabilities across distributed systems.

• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively in a remote-first setting.
