
Senior Software Engineer, Core Open-Source

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +3 more states.
• Take charge of projects within Marimo's open-source ecosystem, concentrating on Marimo's backend and its Python framework.
• Impact key decisions regarding library design, ensuring that APIs are straightforward yet modular.
• Craft new features that expand the possibilities of interactive computing while maintaining a seamless user experience.
• Operate transparently and swiftly — engage quickly with a large and active community of users and contributors.
• Assess issues and discern underlying needs by reading between the lines.
• Use discretion to balance the aspirations of the community with the strategic roadmap and vision.
• Over 4 years of experience in software engineering.
• Expertise in Python, with strong foundational skills that are applicable across languages.
• Knowledge of computer systems, including parallel computing (threading, multiprocessing), concurrency (asynchronous programming), and basic networking/inter-process communication.
• Background in library design and/or open-source contributions.
• Excellent communication abilities, both written and verbal.
• A passion for and experience in developing tools for developers, particularly in AI, ML, or data (preferred).
• An enthusiasm for working with data, with the capacity to empathize with professionals and researchers in AI, ML, data engineering, NLP, or other quantitative fields (preferred).
• A keen eye for visual and interaction design, prioritizing simplicity (preferred).
• Enjoyment in daily interactions with users and the community (preferred).
• Proficiency in Typescript, or a willingness to learn (preferred).
• Experience in AI engineering, including MCP and agents (preferred).
• Familiarity with SQL, databases, and data engineering (preferred).
• Experience with at least one systems programming language, such as C or Rust (preferred).
