Senior Software Engineer – AI Software, Operations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.

📋 Description

• Develop innovative Python applications from the ground up using agentic methodologies, incorporating AI agent workflows with tools such as Claude Code, LangChain, or similar frameworks.

• Design the scaffold layer that manages multi-agent pipelines, encompassing role separation, context injection, and output validation.

• Connect agentic systems with the GitHub-based knowledge repository that acts as the organization-wide context layer for engineering activities.

• Assess and integrate emerging agentic tools and LLM capabilities, providing structured recommendations to the team.

• Create and implement services, RESTful and event-driven APIs, as well as data access layers across Python backends and React frontends.

• Facilitate integration between internal services and external platforms, including third-party APIs relevant to incident response workflows and business operations.

• Write maintainable code that is readable, extensible, and reliable in production environments for fellow engineers.

• Manage and operate AWS infrastructure across all environments (development, staging, production), utilizing Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD through GitHub Actions. Engineers here take ownership of their deliverables, from code to infrastructure — this is a feature, not a burden.

• Establish monitoring, alerting, and observability systems to ensure that production issues are identified early and resolved quickly.

• Ensure that infrastructure complies with Surefire’s security and compliance standards. As a cybersecurity firm, security is a design constraint, not merely a review step.

• Recognize weaknesses in the current architecture and suggest practical improvements with a clear justification.

⛳️ Requirements

• Solid software engineering principles: ability to write, debug, and reason about code without relying on AI tools, with a proven history of building rather than just maintaining.

• Full-stack expertise that encompasses backend (Python, API design, both relational and non-relational databases) and frontend (React or similar technologies).

• Experience with AWS at a production level, including VPC design, EC2/ECS/Lambda, IAM, RDS, S3, and Kubernetes.

• Proficiency in Terraform as a primary tool, not just an auxiliary skill.

• Experience with GitHub Actions or a comparable CI/CD pipeline at a production scale.

• Ability to operate with significant autonomy within a small team where fast shipping, handling ambiguity, and self-enforcing processes are essential.

• Willingness to work beyond standard business hours to fulfill business needs as required.

• Practical experience in building or managing AI agent workflows using tools such as Claude Code, LangChain, AutoGen, CrewAI, or similar (strongly preferred).

• Familiarity with MCP (Model Context Protocol) server architecture and LLM context injection patterns (strongly preferred).

• Background in cybersecurity, incident response, or engineering roles related to compliance (strongly preferred).

• Experience in a startup or rapidly growing environment where agility, multi-tasking, and operating without extensive support are common (strongly preferred).
