📋 Description

• Conduct research, develop, and produce high-quality journalism, encompassing long-form features, news reports, investigations, video content, and other multimedia formats.

• Demonstrate mastery in specific beat(s), exceptional judgment, and the capability to break stories and secure exclusive scoops.

• Consistently deliver a minimum of three published pieces each month.

• Provide impactful in-depth reporting, which includes at least six investigations and/or on-the-ground stories annually.

• Manage multiple leads and assignments, effectively prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.

• Generate original story ideas that align with editorial priorities, while also eagerly accepting assignments from the bureau chief and other managing editors.

• Participate in cross-team projects or collaborations across the newsroom or co-publications.

• Utilize freedom of information systems and public data to enhance reporting efforts.

• Build, cultivate, and maintain a diverse network of sources.

• Keep organized records of reporting materials and files in designated team folders.

• Collaborate with photojournalists, including coordinating travel for reporting assignments.

• Attend in-person conferences, legislative sessions, press conferences, interviews, etc., as necessary.

• Ensure that reporting is factually accurate and adheres to legal and editorial standards.

• Source images and upload articles to the website as necessary.

• Produce reporting that consistently achieves exceptional impact, such as use by experts, republication, collaboration with other media outlets, invitations to panels and broadcast shows, and contributions to policy discussions and changes.

• Support audience engagement initiatives, including newsletters, webinars, and community events.

• Provide mentorship and guidance to fellow reporters.

• Share knowledge, tools, and best practices in reporting with the team, including occasionally leading staff workshops and training sessions.

• Foster a collaborative work environment through the generous sharing of ideas and credit.

• Lead and support team processes and internal systems.

• Stay informed about best practices in journalism and industry standards, pursue ongoing professional development, and share insights and recommendations to enhance team and editorial processes.

• Offer editorial support in the absence of a bureau chief, as needed.


⛳️ Requirements

• At least eight years of reporting experience or an equivalent background.

• Proven experience in investigative and field-based reporting.

• Background in reporting on climate, environment, energy, biodiversity, Indigenous Rights, conservation, land use, or related subjects.

• Extensive experience reporting within diverse or underrepresented communities.

• Significant experience producing stories that incorporate multiple perspectives and avoid binary framing.

• Experience working in a collaborative newsroom environment, including with remote and cross-functional teams.

• Strong writing skills across various formats, including news, features, and investigative work.

• Excellent research and investigative skills, encompassing freedom of information processes, data analysis, and public records research.

• Demonstrated success in building and maintaining a diverse source network, emphasizing diversity in geography, lived experience, and background.

• Strong understanding of environmental, climate, biodiversity, energy, and policy issues.

• Comprehensive understanding of federal environmental and climate policy, along with the relationships between Canada’s federal government, provinces, First Nations, Inuit and Métis governments and communities, the United States, and international players.

• Working knowledge of Indigenous Rights and issues, with a commitment to ongoing learning and relationship-based reporting.

• Familiarity with solutions journalism and trauma-informed journalism practices.

• Strong communication, organization, and time management abilities.

• Capability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative, distributed team.

• Proficiency with digital newsroom tools and content management systems.

• Experience mentoring peers and less experienced journalists.

• Understanding of how reporting supports The Narwhal’s non-profit funding model and related audience objectives.
