This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.
• Oversee corporate and income tax compliance and provisions, which include federal, state, and local filings, quarterly estimates, and coordination of the annual return in collaboration with external advisors.
• Administer sales and indirect tax across all operating jurisdictions, encompassing nexus determination, registration, filing, and audit response.
• Identify, select, and implement a tax engine if necessary, integrating it with the ERP (Rillet) and internal systems to automate tax calculations on a large scale.
• Handle Canadian tax responsibilities and communications with the Canada Revenue Agency, addressing GST/HST, provincial sales taxes, SRED, and cross-border issues linked to the EOR model.
• Investigate technical tax positions and convert findings into documented, defensible filing positions and internal policies.
• Collaborate with Product and Engineering to design the tax structure of customer invoices, ensuring accurate taxes are assessed, displayed, and remitted.
• Counsel leadership on tax planning, exposure, and prudent positions as the business expands into new jurisdictions and launches new products.
• Cultivate relationships with third-party tax advisors, auditors, and taxing authorities, guiding external work while retaining in-house oversight wherever feasible.
• A bachelor's degree in accounting, taxation, or finance.
• A minimum of six years of progressive tax experience, covering corporate/income tax and sales/indirect tax.
• Experience in public accounting, preferably with a Big Four or regional firm, before transitioning to an in-house role.
• Practical experience in implementing or managing a tax engine and integrating it with an ERP system.
• Familiarity with ASC 740 tax provisions and the corporate compliance cycle.
• International or foreign tax experience, ideally including Canadian tax, GST/HST, provincial sales tax, and direct dealings with the Canada Revenue Agency.
• Proficient in tax research platforms such as Checkpoint, Bloomberg Tax, or CCH.
• Capability to independently research tax law and develop documented, defensible filing positions.
• Strong organizational skills and self-sufficiency to manage a complete tax function as a solo practitioner.
• Proven experience advising Finance and Product partners and influencing decisions with clear, practical guidance.
• A Master of Science in Taxation or an equivalent graduate tax focus is an advantage.
• CPA or CPA, Ontario / equivalent is preferred but not mandatory.
