Senior Cloud Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Idaho, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Lead the Modernization Wave: Design and implement a comprehensive migration strategy to transition legacy APM, distributed tracing, and log management workloads from New Relic and Elastic to a modern Grafana (LGTM) and OpenTelemetry architecture.

• Consolidate & Standardize Data Models: Convert legacy NRQL/Lucene querying paradigms and proprietary formats into scalable PromQL, LogQL, and TraceQL structures, ensuring that historical operational context is preserved during the transition.

• Optimize Telemetry Architecture: Review current data pipelines to minimize redundancy, manage label cardinality, and apply robust data-filtering strategies that enhance Grafana Mimir/Loki efficiency while reducing total cost of ownership.

• Establish Operational Excellence: Develop and refine key metrics for observability; cultivate a culture of operational excellence where telemetry data drives the success of products and services.

• Define future-state cloud platform strategies. Design and architect for resilience, fault tolerance, and self-healing capabilities.

• Enforce cloud security policies, schema protocols, and best practices. Set engineering standards that boost efficiency and maintainability across various products.

• Influence engineering roadmaps (e.g., technical debt, NFRs) and proactively identify technical gaps, risks, and mitigations. Engage in leadership meetings to align technical outcomes with business objectives.

• Provide mentorship and guidance to engineers at all levels. Take an active role in skill development, promoting growth in cloud engineering disciplines.

• Serve as a primary resource for complex technical issues. Collaborate effectively across teams, harmonizing differing perspectives and steering discussions toward constructive resolutions.

⛳️ Requirements

• 5 years of proven expertise in managing all facets of a Grafana Cloud installation.

• 2 years of experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) or related development background.

• Experience in a technical leadership role.

• Proven Migration Experience: Technical leadership in at least one large-scale migration from proprietary APM platforms (specifically New Relic or Datadog) or major log-analytics platforms (Elasticsearch/ELK) to a cohesive open-source or Grafana-centric stack.

• Deep Query Language Fluency: Mastery of PromQL, LogQL, and TraceQL, with a solid foundational understanding of how to transition from legacy languages such as NRQL or Lucene syntax.

• Strategic Influence: Capability to garner support across the organization.

• Communication: Proficient in conveying information to diverse audiences (from direct leaders to engineering teams).
