• Research, develop, and create high-quality journalism, including long-form features, news articles, investigations, video content, and other multimedia formats.
• Demonstrate expertise in specific beat(s), exceptional judgement, and the capability to break stories and secure exclusive insights.
• Consistently deliver a minimum of three published pieces each month.
• Provide impactful in-depth reporting, including at least six investigations and/or on-the-ground stories annually.
• Manage multiple leads and assignments, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet deadlines.
• Generate original story ideas that align with editorial priorities, while eagerly taking on assignments from the bureau chief and other supervising editors.
• Participate in cross-team projects or collaborations across the newsroom and co-publications.
• Utilize freedom of information systems and public data to bolster reporting efforts.
• Build, develop, and maintain a diverse network of sources.
• Keep organized records of reporting materials and files in designated team folders.
• Collaborate with photojournalists, including coordinating travel for reporting assignments.
• Attend in-person conferences, legislative sessions, press events, interviews, etc., as necessary.
• Ensure reporting is factually accurate, adhering to legal and editorial standards.
• Source images and upload articles to the website, as needed.
• Produce reporting that consistently achieves exceptional impact, such as being referenced by experts, republication, collaborations with other media outlets, invitations to panels and broadcast shows, and influencing policy discussions.
• Support audience goals and engagement initiatives, including newsletters, webinars, and community events.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to fellow reporters.
• Share knowledge, tools, and reporting best practices with the team, occasionally leading workshops and training sessions.
• Cultivate a collaborative work environment by sharing ideas and recognizing contributions generously.
• Lead and support team processes and internal systems.
• Stay informed on journalism best practices and industry standards, pursuing ongoing professional development, and sharing insights to enhance team and editorial processes.
• Offer editorial support in the absence of the bureau chief, as required.
• Minimum of eight years of reporting experience or equivalent qualifications.
• Proven experience in investigative and field-based reporting.
• Experience covering topics related to climate, environment, energy, biodiversity, Indigenous rights, conservation, land use, or similar areas.
• Extensive experience reporting in and about diverse or underrepresented communities.
• Significant experience producing stories that reflect multiple perspectives and avoid binary framing.
• Experience working within a collaborative newsroom environment, including remote and cross-functional teams.
• Strong writing abilities across news, features, and investigative journalism.
• Proficient research and investigative skills, including familiarity with freedom of information processes, data analysis, and public records research.
• Proven success in building and maintaining a diverse source network, emphasizing diversity in geography, lived experiences, and backgrounds.
• Strong understanding of environmental, climate, biodiversity, energy, and policy issues in British Columbia.
• Working knowledge of Indigenous rights and issues, along with a commitment to ongoing learning and relationship-based reporting.
• Familiarity with solutions journalism and trauma-informed journalism practices.
• Mastery of The Narwhal’s style of journalism, editorial focus, and tone, including the ability to “complicate the narrative” and report that bridges various divides.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a distributed team.
