• Participate in discovery sessions alongside the BI Product Manager when the consumption experience plays a key role in problem definition.
• Observe user interactions with data in their real environments, provide a user experience perspective prior to solution implementation, and challenge solutions that may be technically feasible but experientially inadequate.
• Take ownership of information hierarchy, navigation, visualization selection, and layout across BI reporting products.
• Make and justify design decisions based on the requirements of the report rather than personal aesthetic preferences.
• Collaborate with the Analytics Developer regarding data availability before committing to design choices.
• Maintain a thorough understanding of the two main consumer types - operational users who require quick action and leadership users who seek context and narrative - and design accordingly for each group.
• Conduct user testing with actual participants from both user categories prior to the final delivery of work.
• Create prototypes early and share work in progress for feedback.
• Evaluate the design approach, focusing on user behavior rather than solely on visual preferences, and iterate based on actual user interactions.
• Own and uphold the Power BI visual standards for the BI team, which includes color conventions, layout patterns, visualization guidelines, and reusable templates for the two main use cases.
• Document design decisions to ensure that the standard can be evolved purposefully.
• Monitor the usage of delivered work and assess whether the experience facilitates decision-making.
• Identify adoption signals and design-related challenges for further iteration, rather than viewing delivery as the conclusion of the process.
• Engage in sprint planning, backlog grooming, and effort estimation as part of a structured delivery model, with all work tracked and managed in Azure DevOps.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience designing data experiences such as dashboards, reports, or analytics interfaces in a production environment with actual business users.
• Advanced proficiency in Power BI concerning visualization design, report layout, and information hierarchy, with the capability to make and justify visualization choices based on the insights conveyed.
• Proven experience working directly with end users through various discovery methods, including ride-alongs, observational sessions, usability testing, or structured interviews.
• Working knowledge of SQL and underlying data structures sufficient for informed discussions with data developers and the ability to identify when a design relies on non-existent data.
• Ability to operate with a high level of ownership within a small team, without dedicated research, QA, or adoption support functions.
• Experience in building or contributing to a design system or shared visual standard used and maintained by others (Preferred).
• Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric or similar cloud-based analytics platforms (Preferred).
• Experience working within a structured sprint-based delivery model with formal intake processes (Preferred).
• Domain experience in healthcare operations, revenue cycle, or claims processing (Preferred).
• Health insurance
• 401(k) matching
