This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Dakota.
• Perform imagery discovery, selection, and downloading tasks.
• Assemble validation datasets, including LiDAR and bathymetric data.
• Implement cloud-masking techniques and create tailored validation grids.
• Explore bottom-type and seafloor structure mapping utilizing Landsat, Sentinel-2, and NASA imagery.
• Combine ICESat-2 ATL24 bathymetry with AI/ML methods and data modeling approaches.
• Provide assistance to a USGS physics-based satellite-derived bathymetry algorithm.
• Assess the Landsat Aquatic Reflectance product to enhance or facilitate USGS SDB algorithms and workflows.
• Acquire knowledge of the NOAA SatBathy Tool to generate on-demand satellite-derived bathymetry outputs.
• Aid USGS researchers in characterizing, validating, optimizing, and improving near-shore bathymetry algorithms.
• Contribute to coastal and riverine bottom-type characterization mapping, SDB algorithms, and associated products.
• A minimum of a Master’s degree in Earth Science, Natural Science, Physical Science, or a related discipline, with a focus on geography, remote sensing, GIS, software engineering, or information technology.
• At least 5 years of relevant professional experience; various combinations of education and experience may be taken into account.
• Capability to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation post-hire.
• Three years of continuous residency in the United States is mandatory.
• Proficiency in basic remote sensing derivatives and their applications.
• Strong understanding of aquatic science principles.
• Basic knowledge of elevation data and its mapping applications.
• Experience in applying AI/ML techniques to feature identification.
• Proficient in Python programming.
• Skilled in using image processing software such as ENVI/IDL, ERDAS Imagine, ArcPro, or QGIS.
• Familiarity with datasets from Landsat, Sentinel-2, DigitalGlobe, WorldView, and Planet is preferred.
• Previous experience in generating topobathymetric digital elevation models is preferred.
• Expertise in satellite-derived bathymetry is preferred.
• Excellent problem-solving abilities, data quality assurance, organizational skills, attention to detail, record keeping, communication, initiative, self-motivation, reliability, and interpersonal skills.
