Principal Linux Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• As a Principal Linux Engineer, you will be an integral part of the team responsible for the software solutions for Rocky Linux from CIQ (RLC), focusing primarily on the construction, patching, and testing of userspace packages within the operating system.

• Your role will also involve enhancing tooling and automation as part of the package-building process in the OS.

• A solid understanding of CVEs and their remediation within RPM packages delivered to customers is essential.

• Additionally, you will work on customizing, optimizing, and creating various packages to enhance the user experience with our products.

• You will develop testing protocols for both specific software and the overall system.

• Collaborating closely with engineering, product, the open-source community, and sales teams to create effective solutions will be key.

• Participation in architecture-level discussions, planning, and implementation is expected.

• Documenting each project is crucial to share knowledge and ease integration for users.

• You will lead proofs of concept and minimum viable products for demonstration purposes.

• Emphasizing quality through the development of automated tests is a priority.

• Adopting a mentality of rapid and frequent software releases is encouraged.

• Utilizing source control (Github/Gitlab) for all development while collaborating with internal teams and the open-source community is necessary.

• You will support multiple services before they go live by engaging in system design consulting, software platform and framework development, capacity planning, and launch reviews.

• Lastly, deployment will occur on standard server architectures, virtual machines, and cloud infrastructure.

⛳️ Requirements

• Demonstrated work experience as a Linux Engineer, Linux Development Engineer, or a Software Developer with a focus on the Linux OS.

• A minimum of 4 years of experience in supporting Linux, along with at least 2 years of experience in building Linux packages.

• An understanding of Linux OS packaging systems, such as RPM or DEB, is required.

• Familiarity with CVEs and their remediation for older code versions is essential.

• A deep understanding of how a Linux operating system functions, including the interactions among various packages, is necessary.

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a remote team environment is important.

• Proven experience with Linux administration, Linux internals, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD tools and processes is expected.

• Familiarity with Ansible playbooks and/or the DoD STIG/SCAP/RADIX process is advantageous.

• Proficiency in Bash, YAML, XML, JSON, REST APIs/OpenAPI, and HTTP Get/Post is required.

• Familiarity with Python, GoLang, Kubernetes, and other engineering tools/technologies is preferred.

• Strong problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills are essential.

• Ability to adapt to new challenges in a fast-paced startup environment using agile methodologies is necessary.
