This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Direct the architecture, design, and advancement of production-level applied AI systems, encompassing LLM, ML, retrieval, agentic, and automation-based functionalities.
• Take ownership of the most intricate technical challenges throughout the stack, from model behavior and system architecture to infrastructure, reliability, quality, and operational scalability.
• Establish the technical vision for the construction, integration, evaluation, security, monitoring, and ongoing enhancement of AI solutions.
• Influence platform and systems decisions within AWS environments, focusing on performance, resilience, observability, security, and cost efficiency.
• Guide the design and optimization of data systems, including relational and graph databases, data access methodologies, schema strategies, and query performance.
• Lead infrastructure strategies for distributed and cross-regional services where availability, latency, failover, or scalability necessitate heightened architectural rigor.
• Implement enhanced engineering quality practices, such as validation frameworks, automated testing, release management, QA strategies, and incident response maturity.
• Convert unclear business or product opportunities into technical strategies, execution plans, and quantifiable results.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, data science, analytics, and business stakeholders to align priorities and make decisions without relying on formal authority.
• Offer technical guidance to a team of approximately 20 individuals by mentoring engineers, reviewing designs, clarifying trade-offs, and elevating standards for execution.
• Create clarity in ambiguous settings by defining milestones, identifying risks, tracking dependencies, and ensuring accountability across distributed teams.
• Profound experience in developing and scaling production software systems with significant AI/ML components.
• Mastery of Python and familiarity with the latest AI/ML research and implementations/patterns.
• Proven track record in leading architecture and delivery of complex, cross-functional technical projects.
• Strong hands-on engineering skills in backend systems, APIs, services, data pipelines, and production operations.
• Extensive experience with AWS administration and optimization, including cloud architecture, observability, security, reliability, and cost/performance considerations.
• Deep understanding of database system design and optimization, particularly relational systems, with a strong preference for experience with graph databases.
• Capability to function effectively as a technical generalist across related areas such as DevOps, infrastructure engineering, quality/QA, and delivery planning.
• Excellent judgment in ambiguous situations, with the ability to simplify, prioritize, and make informed trade-off decisions.
• Exceptional written communication skills, including architecture documents, technical strategy memos, design reviews, decision records, and asynchronous execution updates.
• Exceptional verbal communication abilities, with the capacity to influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
