Media, Social Media and Crime

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• This course explores every facet of the public safety system from an organizational viewpoint and assesses public safety organizations within a broader environmental framework.

• Students will investigate external organizations, public interests, and both provincial and national policies, while examining the evolving and expanding functions of the public safety system.

• Contemporary issues will be analyzed through various case studies.

• The course will evaluate the effects of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube on law enforcement and investigative practices.

• Students will acquire skills to communicate effectively with the public via social media platforms.

• Participants will be introduced to current policies and legislation regarding the dissemination of sensitive information.

• Additionally, students will delve into cultural criminal theories, critical Marxist theories, and Foucauldian theory.

• Furthermore, students will recognize how real-time virtual public platforms enable law enforcement officials to uncover, conduct, and analyze evidence in the context of solving online crimes.

• Law enforcement personnel will learn to utilize social platforms as tools for social control to help diminish online or virtual deviance, such as cyberbullying.

⛳️ Requirements

• Master’s Degree

• Extensive work experience and/or research in a discipline related to course content, particularly in law enforcement, focusing on social media and the influence of technology on public safety

• Proven success in teaching online courses and a willingness to adopt pedagogical methods that cater specifically to online learners.

• Familiarity with learning management systems (especially Brightspace from Desire2Learn) would be advantageous.
