
Kernel Developer – Patch Backporting and Builds

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Bulgaria.
• Investigate upstream security issues and bug fixes while identifying their dependencies.
• Backport Linux kernel patches to older RPM- and Debian-based distributions.
• Resolve conflicts arising from discrepancies between upstream and target kernel versions.
• Build and rebuild kernel source and binary packages in reproducible environments.
• Validate patched kernels through targeted testing, build checks, and regression analysis.
• Enhance patch preparation, building, and validation workflows using Python, Go, or Shell.
• Employ agentic development tools responsibly, ensuring verification of generated code, analysis, and documentation.
• Document technical decisions and engage in code reviews with the kernel team.
• Proficient C programming and Linux debugging capabilities.
• Hands-on experience with Linux kernel development, patching, or backporting.
• Proficient use of Git, GNU build tools, and standard Linux development utilities.
• Experience in building Linux kernels or distribution packages.
• Automation expertise with Python, Go, Shell, or a comparable language.
• Some familiarity with agentic or AI-assisted development and a methodical approach to validating generated outputs.
• Proficient in English at an intermediate level or higher, both written and spoken.
• Strong sense of ownership, sound technical judgment, and readiness to articulate trade-offs.
• Nice to Have: Experience with RPM/SRPM or Debian kernel packaging.
• Nice to Have: Background in security patching, CVE analysis, or extended lifecycle maintenance.
• Nice to Have: Familiarity with Docker, QEMU, Jenkins, or other CI systems.
• Nice to Have: Experience in designing kernel tests or investigating core dumps and regressions.
