Gameplay Engineer

Posted 1 day ago

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ukraine.

📋 Description

• Implement gameplay systems based on designer briefs, including combat, abilities, movement, AI behaviors, progression, inventory, interaction, and camera — scope may vary by engagement.

• Develop reusable, maintainable, and testable gameplay code using C++ (and Blueprint where applicable) within Unreal Engine 5.

• Take ownership of the Gameplay Ability System (GAS) implementation — including AttributeSets, Abilities, GameplayEffects, and GameplayCues — for engagements utilizing GAS.

• Integrate animation and gameplay by implementing Anim Notifies, state-driven Animation Blueprints, root motion handling, and blendspaces.

• Write multiplayer-safe gameplay code for engagements with networking requirements, covering replication, client-server authority, and lag compensation.

• Profile and optimize gameplay code to meet platform budgets, focusing on CPU frame time, tick overhead, and replication costs.

• Produce code that is easy to review: clean, well-commented where logic may be unclear, and consistent with project standards.

• Identify and resolve gameplay bugs, including edge cases, exploit patterns, and regressions from live updates.

• Actively engage in code reviews: provide specific feedback on peers' pull requests and accept feedback constructively.

• Collaborate directly with gameplay designers to translate design intent into engine behavior, bridging the gap between specifications and final output.

• Early identification of implementation risks in design briefs — addressing potential rework before it arises and suggesting alternatives when specifications are unfeasible.

• Make gameplay parameters accessible to designers in a tunable manner without requiring engineering assistance (e.g., Blueprint exposed properties, Datatable-driven tuning).

• Clearly document systems, including architectural decisions, integration points, and known limitations.

• Facilitate technical handoffs between phases or teams by ensuring the codebase is in a state that the next engineer can understand without needing a phone call.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of professional game development experience, with a minimum of 3 years working on AAA or mid-tier shipped titles.

• At least 2 commercially shipped titles on PC or console as a gameplay engineer — prototypes and internal tools are not considered.

• Extensive experience with Unreal Engine 5 in C++, specifically with the Gameplay Framework (Actor, Component, GameMode, GameState, PlayerController), GAS, CharacterMovement, and Anim BP integration.

• Strong foundational knowledge in C++: memory management, data-oriented thinking, and performance-aware coding practices.

• Proficient in Blueprint — capable of not only reading but also creating designer-facing tools.

• Experience with multiplayer gameplay replication is advantageous but not required for all engagements.

• A strong understanding of game design principles — the ability to differentiate between good and broken gameplay and articulate the reasons behind these evaluations.

• Remote-first work habits: clear asynchronous communication, thorough documentation, and avoidance of creating silent dependencies.
