This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take charge of the technical direction and architecture of Tailscale’s next-generation web console.
• Develop frontend infrastructure and platform capabilities that facilitate the launch of multiple Tailscale products within a cohesive console experience.
• Focus specifically on identity-related frontend systems, encompassing authentication, session management, and secure cross-origin integrations.
• Define and lead the frontend architecture for Tailscale’s next-generation console.
• Design and uphold cross-origin authentication and session infrastructure between the console and other services.
• Construct and manage a frontend serving platform that can host a variety of Tailscale products.
• Establish shared infrastructure, conventions, and design patterns that unify distinct product experiences into a seamless console platform.
• Develop frontend architecture patterns, tooling, and abstractions that empower non-frontend engineers to create accessible, production-quality UI efficiently and safely.
• Collaborate closely with Product Design to translate complex infrastructure and identity concepts into user-friendly experiences.
• Work together with Growth, Design, Product, and other engineering teams on experimentation and iteration.
• Define and enhance the frontend testing strategy across the console.
• Partner with infrastructure and engineering tooling teams to optimize local development workflows.
• Elevate the quality standards for frontend engineering across Tailscale through technical leadership, reviews, mentoring, and well-defined platform guidelines.
• Participate in our on-call rotation every few weeks to address and mitigate incidents.
• Extensive experience in building and managing production React applications at scale.
• Strong grasp of web platform fundamentals, including HTTP semantics, browser security boundaries, authentication flows, cookies, storage, CORS, and CSRF.
• Proven experience in creating internal platforms, frameworks, or shared libraries that allow other teams to deliver products with robust guardrails.
• Experience in steering a unified console or platform vision across diverse frontend codebases.
• Strong judgment regarding frontend architecture: knowing when to standardize, when to abstract, and how to maintain system clarity as they evolve.
• Experience in designing scalable frontend testing strategies that enhance confidence while minimizing incidental complexity for product engineers.
• Comfortable collaborating across disciplines and functions, particularly with design, growth, infrastructure, and developer tooling.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate trade-offs and influence technical direction across teams.
