Frontend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the technical direction and architecture for Tailscale’s next-generation web console.

• Develop frontend infrastructure and platform capabilities that allow various Tailscale products to be delivered through a cohesive console experience.

• Focus on identity-related frontend systems, encompassing authentication, session management, secure cross-origin integrations, and product interfaces that connect multiple services.

• Define and lead the frontend architecture for Tailscale’s next-generation console, which includes application structure, routing, state boundaries, shared abstractions, and long-term maintainability.

• Design and oversee cross-origin authentication and session infrastructure among the console and other services, covering auth flows, CORS policies, CSRF protections, cookie/session strategies, and support for various deployment environments.

• Build and maintain a frontend serving platform that can host multiple Tailscale products under a unified development workflow.

• Establish shared infrastructure, conventions, and design patterns that integrate distinct product experiences into a unified console platform.

• Develop frontend architecture patterns, tools, and abstractions that enable non-frontend engineers to create accessible, production-quality UI effectively and safely.

• Collaborate closely with Product Design to transform complex infrastructure and identity concepts into user-friendly experiences.

• Work alongside Growth, Design, Product, and other engineering teams on experimentation and iteration, including A/B testing, analytics instrumentation, and feature rollout strategies.

• Define and enhance the frontend testing strategy across the console, focusing on integration testing, end-to-end coverage, local developer ergonomics, and abstractions that simplify testing for product teams.

• Collaborate with infrastructure and engineering tooling teams to refine local development workflows, build pipelines, preview deployments, release ergonomics, and operational reliability.

• Elevate the quality of frontend engineering across Tailscale through technical leadership, code reviews, mentoring, and establishing clear platform guidelines.

• Participate in our on-call rotation every few weeks to triage and address incidents.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in building and operating production-scale React applications.

• Profound understanding of web platform fundamentals, including HTTP semantics, browser security boundaries, authentication flows, cookies, storage, CORS, and CSRF.

• Experience in creating internal platforms, frameworks, or shared libraries that empower other teams to deliver products with effective guardrails.

• Proven track record in driving a unified console or platform vision across diverse frontend codebases.

• Strong decision-making skills regarding frontend architecture: knowing when to standardize, when to abstract, and how to maintain system comprehensibility as it scales.

• Experience in designing scalable frontend testing strategies that enhance confidence while minimizing incidental complexity for product engineers.

• Comfort in collaborating across various disciplines and functions, particularly with design, growth, infrastructure, and developer tooling.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate trade-offs and influence technical direction across teams.

• A high level of ownership and autonomy, with the capability to identify critical issues and drive solutions amid uncertainty.

• Experience in designing frontend codebases and tooling that are optimized for AI-assisted development, including conventions and abstractions that assist LLM-based agents in producing accurate, consistent UI with fewer iterations (Nice to Have).
