Freelance Animation Artist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Create high-quality animation that aligns with both artistic vision and production requirements.

• Exhibit a strong understanding of animation fundamentals—timing, weight, arcs, and posing—across various performance styles.

• Quickly adjust to different animation scenarios (realistic creatures, mechanical objects, stylized characters).

• Interpret creative guidance and reference materials to craft nuanced and expressive performances.

• Suggest innovative ideas and motion selections that enhance storytelling and the overall impact of the shot.

• Actively seek and incorporate feedback to improve the quality of the animation.

• Ensure that animations are polished, functional, and ready for export to downstream departments.

• Anticipate and resolve rigging or scene-related challenges in partnership with technical teams.

• Adhere to naming conventions, file organization, and technical requirements as per pipeline standards.

• Provide accurate time estimates, communicate promptly about issues or potential delays, and collaborate with production to shift priorities as necessary.

• Maintain open lines of communication with production, leads, and other departments to facilitate smooth transitions and effective problem-solving.

• Proactively identify obstacles and propose practical solutions when facing technical or creative challenges.

• Actively engage in daily meetings and reviews, clearly presenting work and addressing feedback.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 6 years of experience in a VFX or animation studio setting.

• Strong expertise in Maya; familiarity with other animation software is advantageous.

• Comprehensive understanding of body mechanics and facial animation.

• Ability to animate based on references and develop compelling acting performances.

• Keen attention to detail, independence, and effective deadline management capabilities.

• Positive and collaborative attitude with excellent communication skills.

• Asset: Experience with ShotGrid or similar production tracking tools.

• Asset: Understanding of rigging basics or custom tool development.
