Environmental Data Scientist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado.

📋 Description

• Organize, catalog, and structure diverse environmental and geospatial datasets using consistent metadata and controlled vocabularies, ensuring clear provenance for consistent and reproducible combinations.

• Assist in defining how rules and analytical logic are represented, versioned, and evaluated against layered datasets, maintaining traceable analytical lineage from inputs to results.

• Specify the contents of analytical inputs and outputs, including data, results, and metadata, alongside the schemas that represent them, and oversee the evolution of these schemas over time.

• Apply environmental and hydrologic domain expertise to influence the weighting, interpretation, and encoding of data into rules.

• Create checks, test cases, and validation logic to ensure that rules yield correct, explainable, and consistent outcomes.

• Document data schemas, analytical logic, and data sources; collaborate with the Science, Engineering, and Platform teams to maintain system comprehensibility, accessibility, and maintainability.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Master's degree in environmental science, ecosystem science, water resources, hydrology, earth science, environmental data science, or a related field; or a Bachelor's degree with 2 years of experience applying data science to environmental issues; or equivalent hands-on experience.

• A robust background in both environmental science and data science, with the ability to conceptualize the representation and integration of environmental evidence.

• Proficiency in a data science programming language such as R or Python for tasks involving data wrangling, analysis, and modeling.

• Familiarity with geospatial data science, including experience with GIS tools and spatial datasets (e.g., R, ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine).

• Ability to think structurally about data schemas, inputs, and outputs, and to translate domain logic into clear, testable rules.

• Excellent technical and scientific writing abilities.
