
Engineering Lead, Core Product Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +4 more states.
• Take ownership of the company-level objectives within the product area and the engineering strategy that realizes them.
• Convert company priorities into actionable plans for the product area and the team, ensuring alignment both upwards and downwards.
• Be accountable for architecture-level trade-offs among the teams within the area; maintain ownership of the technical roadmap and its alignment with product commitments.
• Represent the product area in s-team forums and participate in engineering-wide leadership discussions.
• Mentor Engineering Managers (EMs) to elevate their performance through clear feedback, development plans, and direct assistance.
• Uphold engineering best practices, including flow-based delivery, vertical slicing (with no task exceeding 5 days and no project longer than 4 weeks), WIP discipline, Definition of Done, observability, and AI-native development.
• Proactively address performance issues; guide managers from “satisfactory” to exceptional performance.
• Be assertive when it comes to maintaining our values, quality standards, or operational methods.
• Support and lead architecture and systems design decisions throughout the area, ensuring systems are dependable, maintainable, and ready for operations.
• Accept responsibility for SLAs and incident responses in the area.
• Make intentional trade-offs regarding technical debt and reliability, avoiding accidental decisions.
• Share responsibility for outcomes with Product Management and Design leads (including roadmaps, quarterly goals, and quality standards).
• Collaborate with Revenue, Operations, Customer Experience, and other departments as necessary for the product area.
• Develop practical interim solutions that function effectively today and transition smoothly to mature Platform services.
• Over 2 years of experience managing managers, with direct reports who have also been people managers.
• More than 7 years in technical roles, with a strong background as an individual contributor that can still be leveraged.
• Proven experience owning a product area, pillar, or similar multi-team scope with a demonstrable business impact.
• Experience in building or enhancing engineering practices across multiple teams, not limited to a single team.
• Skilled in hiring, developing, and, when necessary, parting ways with engineering managers.
• Ability to operate with a structured playbook for organizational changes and managerial development, not merely reliant on experience.
• Comfortable making and defending architectural trade-offs; still capable of reasoning about code with sound judgment.
• Exceptional written communication skills; able to express strategy and trade-offs clearly and effectively in writing.
