📋 Description

• Take ownership of the company-level objectives within the product area and the engineering strategy that realizes them.

• Convert company priorities into actionable plans for the product area and the team, ensuring alignment both upwards and downwards.

• Be accountable for architecture-level trade-offs among the teams within the area; maintain ownership of the technical roadmap and its alignment with product commitments.

• Represent the product area in s-team forums and participate in engineering-wide leadership discussions.

• Mentor Engineering Managers (EMs) to elevate their performance through clear feedback, development plans, and direct assistance.

• Uphold engineering best practices, including flow-based delivery, vertical slicing (with no task exceeding 5 days and no project longer than 4 weeks), WIP discipline, Definition of Done, observability, and AI-native development.

• Proactively address performance issues; guide managers from “satisfactory” to exceptional performance.

• Be assertive when it comes to maintaining our values, quality standards, or operational methods.

• Support and lead architecture and systems design decisions throughout the area, ensuring systems are dependable, maintainable, and ready for operations.

• Accept responsibility for SLAs and incident responses in the area.

• Make intentional trade-offs regarding technical debt and reliability, avoiding accidental decisions.

• Share responsibility for outcomes with Product Management and Design leads (including roadmaps, quarterly goals, and quality standards).

• Collaborate with Revenue, Operations, Customer Experience, and other departments as necessary for the product area.

• Develop practical interim solutions that function effectively today and transition smoothly to mature Platform services.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 2 years of experience managing managers, with direct reports who have also been people managers.

• More than 7 years in technical roles, with a strong background as an individual contributor that can still be leveraged.

• Proven experience owning a product area, pillar, or similar multi-team scope with a demonstrable business impact.

• Experience in building or enhancing engineering practices across multiple teams, not limited to a single team.

• Skilled in hiring, developing, and, when necessary, parting ways with engineering managers.

• Ability to operate with a structured playbook for organizational changes and managerial development, not merely reliant on experience.

• Comfortable making and defending architectural trade-offs; still capable of reasoning about code with sound judgment.

• Exceptional written communication skills; able to express strategy and trade-offs clearly and effectively in writing.
